Syria’s new President, Ahmed al-Sharaa, is set to visit the United Arab Emirates for the first time since taking office. His visit was confirmed by the Syrian foreign ministry in a statement released on Sunday. After the UAE, Sharaa is also expected to travel to Turkey next week.
This visit to the UAE marks Sharaa’s second official trip to the Gulf region, following his visit to Saudi Arabia in February. That trip was his first abroad since he became president in January.
President Sharaa and other members of Syria’s new leadership have been working hard to rebuild relationships with Arab and Western countries. These efforts come after former president Bashar al-Assad was removed from power in December, following a fast and forceful military push by Sharaa’s group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham — a Sunni Islamist organization.

Since taking charge, Sharaa’s government has been calling for the full removal of international sanctions placed on Syria. These sanctions, mostly from the United States, the United Kingdom, and European countries, were put in place over the last 14 years during Syria’s long and devastating civil war. The sanctions have deeply hurt Syria’s economy, blocking trade and limiting access to financial systems and resources.
Now, as the country tries to recover, President Sharaa hopes that building better international ties and asking for sanctions to be lifted will help Syria begin its journey toward economic stability and peace.
