Ahmedabad, September 5, 2025: Harshit Babulal Jain, a fugitive wanted in India for multiple serious offences including tax evasion, illegal gambling, and money laundering, was deported from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Friday. The deportation was part of a coordinated operation carried out by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Gujarat Police, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Deportation and Handover

According to the CBI, Harshit Babulal Jain was handed over to the Gujarat Police at Ahmedabad International Airport on September 5, 2025. The operation was executed after Jain, who was on the run for years, was located in the UAE. A spokesperson for the CBI stated, “The subject Harshit Babulal Jain is wanted by Gujarat Police in cases of tax evasion, illegal gambling, and money laundering. Earlier, the CBI got a Red Notice issued against him through Interpol on August 9, 2023, at the request of Gujarat Police.”

Jain had an Interpol Red Notice against him, which is an international alert used to locate and provisionally arrest individuals wanted for prosecution or to serve a sentence. With this notice, authorities in the UAE were able to identify Jain and coordinate with Indian authorities for his deportation.

Crimes Allegedly Committed

Harshit Babulal Jain is accused of several financial and criminal offences:

  1. Tax Evasion: Jain allegedly avoided paying a large amount of taxes, causing significant revenue loss to the Indian government.

  2. Illegal Gambling: He is accused of running or being involved in illegal gambling operations, which are prohibited under Indian law.

  3. Money Laundering: Jain allegedly moved or concealed the proceeds of illegal activities through complex financial transactions to hide their origin.

The Gujarat Police have been pursuing Jain for years. With the help of the CBI and Interpol, his location in the UAE was confirmed, leading to the successful deportation.

Role of CBI and BHARATPOL

The Central Bureau of Investigation, as India’s National Central Bureau for Interpol, works closely with various law enforcement agencies through BHARATPOL. BHARATPOL is a platform that coordinates the tracking and deportation of fugitives back to India.

The CBI spokesperson highlighted that “more than 100 wanted criminals have been deported to India in recent years under BHARATPOL operations.” This highlights India’s continuous efforts to bring fugitives who flee abroad back to the country to face justice.

Previous Example: Mainpal Dhilla from Cambodia

In a similar case, the CBI, in collaboration with Haryana Police, the Ministry of External Affairs, and the Home Ministry, successfully brought back Mainpal Dhilla, also known as Sonu Kumar, from Cambodia.

Mainpal Dhilla was a notorious criminal wanted by Haryana Police in multiple cases. He had been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, attempt to murder, illegal use of firearms, and criminal conspiracy on April 29, 2013. While serving his sentence, Dhilla was released on a six-week parole from Hisar Central Jail on July 17, 2018, during which he absconded.

Later, in November 2024, a Red Notice was issued by the CBI through Interpol at the request of Haryana Police. Dhilla was tracked to Cambodia with the assistance of the National Crime Bureau (NCB) in Bangkok. He had used a fraudulently obtained passport under the fake name Sonu Kumar. This case is another example of India’s collaboration with international agencies to bring fugitives back to face the law.

Mumbai on Alert: Bomb Threat During Ganesh Visarjan

In another major security incident, Mumbai Police were put on high alert after receiving a bomb threat during Ganesh Visarjan on Friday. The threat, claimed by an organisation called Lashkar-e-Jihadi, warned that 34 “human bombs” carrying 400 kg of RDX were planted in 34 vehicles across the city, capable of killing a massive number of people.

The threat coincided with the final day of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations when large crowds gather for the immersion of Ganesh idols. Mumbai Police have strengthened security measures across the city to ensure the safety of the public.

Past Bomb Hoax Incidents

This is not the first time Mumbai Police have faced such threats.

  • In August, the ISKCON Temple in Girgaon received a bomb threat email, which turned out to be a hoax after a thorough search.

  • In July, a hoax bomb threat was reported at Terminal 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), which also turned out to be false.

These incidents show the persistent threats that authorities face during major public events, requiring heightened vigilance and preparation.

India’s Ongoing Efforts Against Crime

The deportation of Harshit Babulal Jain emphasizes India’s commitment to bringing fugitives to justice, irrespective of where they flee. It also reflects the growing cooperation between Indian law enforcement agencies and international counterparts like Interpol, UAE authorities, and others.

Authorities urge citizens to cooperate with law enforcement and report any suspicious activity, especially during crowded public events.

  • Harshit Babulal Jain, wanted for tax evasion, illegal gambling, and money laundering, was deported from UAE.

  • Jain had a Red Notice from Interpol, which helped authorities track him internationally.

  • The CBI, Gujarat Police, MEA, and Home Ministry coordinated the operation.

  • Previous cases like Mainpal Dhilla show India’s success in bringing fugitives back from abroad.

  • Mumbai Police remain vigilant against bomb threats during major festivals like Ganesh Visarjan.

This incident reinforces the importance of international collaboration and proactive policing to maintain law and order, protect public safety, and ensure criminals face justice regardless of borders.
