Sweden Sauna Song Leads Eurovision 2025 as Controversies Surround Israel's Participation

Sweden Sauna Song Leads Eurovision 2025 as Controversies Surround Israel's Participation

Post by : Elena Malik

Sweden is the big favourite to win this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. The contest will happen on Saturday in Basel, Switzerland. Sweden’s entry is a funny song about saunas, which might help ease some of the tension around the show.

The Swedish group KAJ, made up of three comedians, has a 42% chance to win this huge music event. The contest is happening while there are protests because Israel is taking part. Israel is still involved in a military attack on Gaza, which has caused many people to speak out.

If KAJ wins, it will be the eighth time Sweden has won Eurovision. This would make Sweden the country with the most wins, passing Ireland.

KAJ’s song is called “Bara Bada Bastu,” which means “Let’s Just Sauna.” The song talks about how saunas are a special part of life – a time to relax, be quiet, and connect with others. One member, Kevin Holmstrom, said the sauna is an important and peaceful tradition.

Austria is the second favourite. Their singer, JJ, mixes opera and techno in a song called “Wasted Love.”

Eurovision expert William Lee Adams said it looks like a race between Sweden and Austria. He described the Swedish song as “fun, silly, and camp,” which are all good for winning Eurovision. He also said the performance is fun to watch – with people dancing in towels and men who start off serious but end up relaxed and happy.

More than 160 million people are expected to watch the contest. There is also a chance that famous Canadian singer Celine Dion might make a special appearance. She won Eurovision in 1988 for Switzerland but may not be able to come because of health problems. She said in a video message that she would love to be in Basel.

Switzerland is hosting Eurovision this year because a Swiss singer named Nemo won the contest last year in Sweden.

Even though Eurovision says it is not political, this year there has been a lot of arguments because of the war in Gaza. Israel’s singer, Yuval Raphael, was at a music festival when Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023. That attack killed 1,200 people and left 251 people taken as hostages, according to Israeli officials.

Groups supporting Palestine have asked the contest’s organizers to stop Israel from taking part because of the war. More than 50,000 people have died in Gaza due to Israel’s military actions, local health officials say.

These groups say it is unfair to allow Israel to compete while Russia was stopped from taking part after it invaded Ukraine.

Geri Mueller, president of the Swiss Palestine group, said, “How can Israel be in a happy contest like Eurovision that stands for tolerance when it is killing thousands and bombing hospitals in Gaza?”

The contest’s organizers said they hope the contest can bring people together despite these problems. They said, “We know the world has big issues, but our job is to keep Eurovision a place for music, connection, diversity, and inclusion.”
