In an impressive display, South Africa secured a dominant 65-run victory against Ireland in the second T20I held in Paarl, establishing a 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Opting to bat first, South Africa amassed a formidable total of 201 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Ireland struggled to keep pace, finishing their innings at 136 runs for 3.
Dane Van Niekerk shone brightly in her return to the team, contributing a blistering 41 runs off just 19 deliveries, including three boundaries and three towering sixes, which elevated South Africa’s scoring rate to over ten runs per over. Additionally, Chloe Tryon chipped in with a quick-fire 16 runs off seven balls, ensuring the team breached the 200-run milestone while also setting a new record for the most sixes hit by a South African woman in T20Is.
Earlier, Faye Tunnicliffe was instrumental, notching up her inaugural T20I fifty with a score of 50 from 40 balls. Her robust opening stand of 78 runs alongside Sune Luus laid a solid foundation for South Africa's total. For Ireland, Aimee Maguire emerged as the leading bowler, claiming 3 wickets for 43 runs against Tunnicliffe, Luus, and captain Laura Wolvaardt.
Ireland's chase faltered early on, accumulating just 33 runs during the powerplay without losing a wicket. Chloe Tryon struck twice, dismissing openers Amy Hunter and Gaby Lewis, leaving Ireland at 35 for 2. Their run rate remained sluggish throughout the innings.
Orla Prendergast and Leah Paul attempted to rebuild with a respectable 76-run partnership for the third wicket. Paul scored 40 runs off 29 balls, while Prendergast was left unbeaten with 51 runs from 43 balls, reaching her half-century in the final over. However, by then, the match was firmly in South Africa's grasp, sealing their series triumph.
