Major Snowstorm Hits Poland, Leaving 20 km Traffic Snarls

A fierce winter storm wreaked havoc across Poland, with heavy snowfall leading to extensive traffic delays and hundreds of drivers left stranded in icy conditions. The S7 motorway, linking Warsaw and Gdansk, experienced the most severe issues.

As snowfall ramped up Tuesday afternoon, authorities reported increasingly perilous driving conditions. Trucks struggled with icy inclines, resulting in a chain reaction of congestion that left traffic at a near standstill. By the evening, the jam extended nearly 20 kilometers, trapping motorists for extended periods.

Many were taken by surprise as conditions deteriorated rapidly. With temperatures plummeting and snow falling overnight, drivers—including families and freight operators—found themselves stuck for hours with little mobility. Fortunately, local police confirmed no injuries occurred during this ordeal.

Throughout the night, local law enforcement actively managed the crisis, assisting stranded drivers. Officers in Ostroda distributed hot drinks to provide some relief. These refreshments were prepared in collaboration with the city hall to offer warmth to those enduring the cold.

By early Wednesday morning, traffic began to flow again thanks to the efforts of snow-clearing teams that improved road conditions. Emergency services and snowplows worked in unison to clear blocked roads and safely guide vehicles.

The heavy snowfall not only impacted road traffic but also caused minor delays in some railway and airport services. Nevertheless, by Wednesday, most operations returned to normal as cleaning efforts advanced and weather conditions improved.

Deputy Infrastructure Minister Stanislaw Bukowiec confirmed the lack of injuries despite the extensive delays and difficult conditions, commending the swift actions of emergency personnel and local authorities.

This event underscores the challenges posed by sudden winter weather on transport systems, even in regions accustomed to harsh winters. Officials are advising residents to stay informed about weather advisories, keep emergency supplies handy, and avoid non-essential travel during severe snow events.

As Europe continues to experience winter, Polish authorities remain vigilant for further snowfalls in the upcoming weeks, emphasizing the importance of safety during extreme weather phenomena.
