Singapore's Indian-origin Leader of Opposition, Pritam Singh, has been re-elected as secretary-general of the Workers' Party (WP), reaffirming his leadership ahead of the city-state's next general election. The election also saw Sylvia Lim retain her role as chairwoman, with a total of 14 members elected to the Central Executive Committee (CEC), the WP's principal decision-making body.
Singh, 48, was elected unopposed, continuing his tenure that began in 2018. Following the election, he expressed satisfaction with the outcome, emphasizing the internal nature of the process during his remarks to reporters. "This wasn't about candidature, this was an internal party election, so my comments will be restricted to that," Singh stated, as reported by Channel News Asia.

The newly constituted WP CEC, now serving a two-year term, is expected to play a pivotal role as Singapore gears up for its next general election. Although constitutionally due by November 2025, there is speculation that the election could be called earlier, possibly as soon as November this year.
In March, Singh faced legal proceedings after being charged with allegedly misleading Parliament about a case involving former WP member Raeesah Khan. Khan had made allegations regarding mishandling of a sexual assault case by the police. Singh, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges, is scheduled to stand trial starting in October, with the proceedings anticipated to continue through November, according to recent court records.
The developments come amidst heightened political scrutiny and anticipation ahead of the upcoming election cycle in Singapore.
