Starting March 19, Singapore is streamlining travel for individuals crossing via Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints. Instead of relying on passports, travelers will only need to present a scanned single QR code for both arrival and departure, as announced by the nation's Immigration & Checkpoints Authority. This QR code can be generated in advance and used for all occupants in a vehicle.
This initiative aims to significantly reduce overall wait times, potentially cutting down congestion by approximately 30%, especially during peak periods when workers are frequently crossing the border from Malaysia. The convenience of using QR codes will extend to other land checkpoints with Malaysia, further enhancing efficiency at one of the world's busiest border crossings.
As global travel resumes post-Covid, Singapore is embracing technological advancements at Changi Airport, renowned for its futuristic ambiance and efficiency. The government plans to gradually replace manual counters at all passenger halls with about 800 automated lanes, utilizing a new contactless automated border control system starting in the first quarter of 2024. This system underwent successful trials at Changi Airport's Terminal 4 in 2019. In January alone, 5.43 million people passed through Singapore's main airport.
Additionally, this move is expected to pave the way for the Rapid Transit Link project connecting Singapore and Johor Bahru in Malaysia. The project, projected to be operational by the end of 2026, boasts a peak capacity of up to 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction. With these developments, Singapore is positioning itself for a seamless and technologically advanced travel experience in the post-pandemic era.
