In a bold move signaling the next phase of Indian cricket, Shubman Gill has been appointed as the new captain of India’s ODI side, replacing Rohit Sharma. The 25-year-old will lead the team for the three-match series against Australia starting October 19.
Gill’s rise comes after an impressive start to his leadership tenure, having recently captained India to a dominant innings-and-140-run victory over West Indies in his debut Test as captain. He will now juggle responsibilities as the ODI captain while continuing as T20I vice-captain. Shreyas Iyer has been named vice-captain for the ODI side.
Key Squad Updates
While the leadership changes grab headlines, the squad selection offers a mix of experience and fresh talent. Senior stalwarts Rohit Sharma (38) and Virat Kohli (36) remain in the squad, ensuring continuity.

Notable absences include Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant, sidelined due to injuries—a quad strain and fractured right foot, respectively. Their absence paved the way for newcomers Nitish Kumar Reddy and Dhruv Jurel. Yashasvi Jaiswal also earns a spot, while veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is omitted. Jasprit Bumrah will sit out the ODIs to return for the T20Is.
The ODI squad features a strong bowling unit led by Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, and Harshit Rana.
For the T20Is, Bumrah headlines the attack, complemented by Suryakumar Yadav as captain, Shubman Gill as vice-captain, and a squad largely unchanged from India’s Asia Cup-winning team.
Tour Schedule
India will kick off the white-ball tour with ODIs:
October 19 – Perth Stadium
October 23 – Adelaide Oval
October 25 – Sydney Cricket Ground
This will be followed by a five-match T20I series from October 29 to November 8 in Canberra, Melbourne, Hobart, Gold Coast, and Brisbane.
With a blend of emerging talent and seasoned players, India’s team enters the Australia tour under new leadership, aiming to maintain momentum and test the depth of its white-ball resources.
