Sharjah, on Wednesday, revealed that at least 707 individuals, including 346 from 61 Emirati families, found refuge following heavy rains causing damage to their homes. The Department of Housing swiftly mobilized teams for evacuation and immediate aid, accommodating affected families in hotels across eastern regions such as Kalba, Khorfakkan, and Dibba Al Hisn.
In response to the deluge's impact—resulting in flooded homes, collapsing roofs, and electrical malfunctions—the department housed 61 citizen families in four hotels. Technical teams assessed damaged homes, identifying those uninhabitable or on the brink of collapse.
Strategic Plans for Future
The department aims to develop a robust system to handle unforeseen situations, enhance operational efficiency, and ensure long-term residential stability for affected families. Maximum assistance will be provided, addressing identified needs.
Rain Damage Certificates
Sharjah Police issued over 300 damage certificates for shops and vehicles due to rain, a significant decrease from last year, attributed to increased public awareness. Certificates can be obtained via the 'shjpolice' app.
Municipality's 24/7 Response
Sharjah City Municipality reported 44mm of rain on Sunday and Monday. Proactive plans were activated using technical and human resources to drain waterlogged areas continuously. The municipality deployed over 300 tankers, 120 mobile pumps, and 75 fixed lifting stations, with 49 ponds built for rainwater collection.
Director-General Obaid Saeed Al Tunaiji highlighted the efforts of more than 300 employees, including municipal leaders, to manage the situation. Roadside assistance, inspection teams, and a 24/7 call centre (993) further contributed to swift responses and efficient handling of reports, ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.
