Spain’s Supreme Court has ordered the temporary release of Santos Cerdan, a former senior official in the ruling Socialist Party, citing a reduced risk of evidence tampering. Cerdan had been held in custody since June while facing a major corruption investigation.

The investigation revolves around allegations that senior government-linked officials received kickbacks from companies in exchange for awarding public works contracts. Prosecutors claim these contracts were given through a scheme that benefited certain businesses while bypassing fair competition rules. Cerdan is accused of being part of a criminal organization, as well as engaging in bribery and influence-peddling.

The Supreme Court emphasized that Cerdan’s provisional release does not mean he has been cleared of charges. He is expected to follow strict legal conditions during the ongoing investigation. Authorities will continue monitoring him closely to prevent any interference with the case.

The alleged corruption scheme reportedly involved payments and favors that allowed companies to secure public works contracts. Investigators are examining multiple parties linked to government projects to determine the full extent of the alleged misconduct.

Cerdan’s release has attracted public attention as Spain continues to deal with several high-profile political corruption cases. Transparency and accountability remain major concerns among citizens, who are watching closely to see how the judicial system handles officials accused of corruption.

Officials say the investigation is ongoing, and prosecutors are working to gather all relevant evidence, including financial records, communications, and testimonies from witnesses and other government employees. The case underscores the challenges Spain faces in holding senior officials accountable while maintaining the integrity of public contracting processes.
