In a recent television interview in Pakistan, former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi made headlines after praising Indian Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and criticising India’s BJP-led government. His remarks, made on Samma TV during a discussion about the recent India-Pakistan Asia Cup match, triggered reactions from India’s ruling party and sparked a political debate across the borders.
Afridi Appreciates Rahul Gandhi
Shahid Afridi, speaking in Urdu, described Rahul Gandhi as a leader who believes in dialogue rather than division. Afridi highlighted that while politics in India is often influenced by religious divides, Rahul Gandhi takes a positive approach by promoting discussion and taking people along.

Afridi said, “This government in India always plays the religion and Muslim-Hindu card to stay in power. This is a very bad mindset, and it will continue as long as they are in power. But some leaders, like Rahul Gandhi, have a very positive mindset. He believes in dialogue and taking people along.”
He further added a sharp critique of India’s government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying, “Is one Israel not enough that you are trying to become another?” Afridi’s statement was interpreted as a reference to India’s policies on sensitive issues like Kashmir and international relations.
BJP Reacts to Afridi’s Comments
The remarks did not go unnoticed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). BJP leaders quickly responded, accusing the Congress and Rahul Gandhi of having close ties with Pakistan. BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Everyone who hates India finds an ally in Rahul Gandhi and Congress.”
Poonawala mentioned controversial figures like Hafiz Saeed, the wanted terrorist, and George Soros, the Hungarian-American investor and philanthropist, as people who “praise Rahul Gandhi.” He even coined a term for Congress, calling it “INC = Islamabad National Congress,” suggesting that the party follows Pakistan’s narrative.
The BJP also pointed to instances such as the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir to allege that the Congress echoes Pakistan’s viewpoint on sensitive national issues. Amit Malviya, head of BJP’s IT cell, referred to Shahid Afridi as a “rabid Hindu-hater” and interpreted his words to mean that Rahul Gandhi favors dialogue with Pakistan over India’s national interests.
The Context: India-Pakistan Asia Cup Match
Afridi’s comments came shortly after India defeated Pakistan in a group-stage match of the Asia Cup. India won the match by seven wickets, extending its dominance in T20Is against Pakistan to 11-3. The match, however, was tense both on and off the field.
Traditionally, teams shake hands before and after matches, but in this game, India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav did not shake hands with Pakistan’s Salman Ali Agha at the toss. Following India’s victory, the team also skipped the customary handshake with the Pakistan players. Pakistan, in return, did not send Agha for the post-match presentation interview with the broadcaster.
The match took place against a backdrop of heightened tensions between the two nations. In April, an attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, left 26 civilians dead. In May, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting Pakistani terror infrastructure. The recent match, therefore, was not just about cricket but also carried political and emotional undertones for both countries.
Historical Tensions Between India and Pakistan
India and Pakistan share a long and complex history, marked by wars, political disputes, and cross-border tensions. Sporting events, especially cricket matches, often become a reflection of the underlying political situation. Afridi’s comments highlighted the connection between politics and sports, showing how cricket personalities are sometimes drawn into political discussions.
Political Impact of Afridi’s Comments
Afridi’s praise for Rahul Gandhi and criticism of the BJP government quickly became a talking point in Indian political circles. The BJP’s reaction shows how sensitive the ruling party is to any comment that can be interpreted as supporting opposition leaders, especially when coming from a foreign figure.
The Congress, Rahul Gandhi, and Shahid Afridi did not respond directly to the BJP’s allegations. However, the party remains under scrutiny for its perceived stance on Pakistan and related issues. The BJP’s strong response, using terms like “Islamabad National Congress,” reflects the ongoing narrative in Indian politics where criticism from foreign figures is often linked to internal political debates.
Cricket Diplomacy: Sports and Politics
The interview also brings attention to the role of cricket diplomacy between India and Pakistan. Cricket matches between the two nations have historically carried more weight than just sports. Every India-Pakistan game draws immense attention, and comments from former players like Afridi can influence public opinion and media coverage.
Afridi, who retired from international cricket but remains a popular figure, used the platform to voice his thoughts on Indian politics, which in turn became a subject of debate. His comments show that sports personalities often hold influence beyond the cricket field and can impact political narratives
Shahid Afridi’s remarks praising Rahul Gandhi while criticizing the BJP government have stirred reactions across political lines. While Afridi appreciates Gandhi’s approach of dialogue and inclusivity, the BJP interpreted these statements as an endorsement of opposition policies and a critique of India’s governance under Modi.
The controversy also highlights the delicate relationship between India and Pakistan, especially in the context of cricket and politics. As tensions persist on political and military fronts, even sports commentary becomes intertwined with national debates.
With India’s continued dominance over Pakistan in cricket and ongoing political disputes, remarks like Afridi’s are likely to spark further discussion in the media and among political leaders. These events underline the intersection of sports, diplomacy, and politics in South Asia, where every word from influential personalities is analyzed and often politicized.
