Medina, Saudi Arabia – November 17, 2025: A devastating bus crash in central Saudi Arabia has claimed the lives of at least 45 Indian pilgrims, with one survivor reported, local and Indian authorities confirmed on Sunday. The bus, traveling from Mecca to Medina, collided with a diesel tanker before bursting into flames in the early hours of the morning, leaving passengers with almost no chance to escape.
According to Hyderabad officials, 54 Indian pilgrims had booked their journey with the same travel company. However, eight of them opted for private transport—a decision that likely saved their lives. The remaining 46 passengers were on the ill-fated bus. Authorities are working with Saudi officials to verify the identities of the victims and provide support to families.
Oleh Synehubov, a top official from Hyderabad, said, “We have received a list of 46 people and are in the process of identification and verification. Central and state government agencies are fully involved, and we expect concrete updates soon.”
The sole survivor, identified as Mohd Abdul Shoiab, was rescued from the charred wreckage, though his condition has not been disclosed. Eyewitnesses reported that most passengers were asleep when the crash occurred, exacerbating the tragedy. Rescue teams described the bus as completely burnt, making victim identification extremely challenging.
The Indian government has immediately responded to the crisis. The Consulate General of India in Jeddah has established a 24x7 control room to assist families (+91 8002440003). The Telangana state government has also issued helpline numbers for affected families: +91 7997959754 and +91 9912919545.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed deep sorrow over the incident and assured full support to the families of the victims, stating, “Our Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate in Jeddah are providing the fullest support. Sincere condolences to the bereaved families. We pray for the speedy recovery of those injured.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi echoed these sentiments on social media, highlighting that Indian officials are in close contact with Saudi authorities and that all possible assistance is being extended to the victims’ families.
This tragic incident comes as thousands of pilgrims travel for religious duties between Mecca and Medina. The crash has raised urgent concerns over travel safety for Indian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the collision, with preliminary reports indicating potential over-speeding or loss of vehicle control as factors.
Rescue operations continue at the crash site, with Saudi emergency services and local authorities working to recover any remaining victims. Families of the pilgrims are being supported by both Indian and Saudi authorities as the identification process continues.
This horrific accident serves as a reminder of the importance of travel safety for pilgrims and underscores the need for stricter monitoring of intercity transport services in Saudi Arabia.
