Saudi Arabia and Qatar have entered into a groundbreaking agreement to construct a high-speed railway connecting Riyadh and Doha, marking a historic first between these two Gulf nations. This new rail line will directly link Riyadh’s King Salman International Airport to Doha’s Hamad International Airport, while also catering to cities like Al-Hofuf and Dammam in Saudi Arabia.
Operating at speeds exceeding 300km/h (186mph), the train journey will take approximately two hours, a stark contrast to the 90 minutes required by air. The ambitious project aims to be completed within six years, with expectations to serve 10 million passengers annually and generate around 30,000 job opportunities in both countries.
The agreement was finalized between Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani during the Emir’s visit to Riyadh. Viewed as a pivotal development in infrastructure, this initiative signals the rekindled cooperation between the two nations following a prolonged period of strained relations.
Relations plummeted in June 2017 when Saudi Arabia, along with the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt, suspended ties with Qatar due to accusations of supporting entities like the Muslim Brotherhood and maintaining close ties with Iran, which Qatar has refuted. Full relations were restored in January 2021 after a pivotal summit in AlUla, Saudi Arabia.
Since that breakthrough, leaders from both countries have frequently engaged in dialogue and collaborated on regional diplomatic efforts, including advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza. The high-speed rail agreement further exemplifies the strengthening of ties and the commitment to long-term connectivity across the Gulf.
