England Women’s national team, led by head coach Sarina Wiegman, are set to face Brazil in a friendly match at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. This will be the first encounter between the two teams since the 2023 Finalissima at Wembley, which England won in a penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 draw.

The England squad will take the field for the first time since winning the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025. Following the Brazil friendly, the team will play against Australia three days later in Derby, providing an opportunity to test new players and strategies ahead of future competitions.

With captain Leah Williamson sidelined due to injury, midfielder Keira Walsh has been named captain for the friendly against Brazil. Wiegman also confirmed that Alex Greenwood, part of the captaincy group, will provide leadership support. Walsh’s experience and leadership are expected to guide the team in the absence of Williamson.

Wiegman highlighted the challenges posed by Brazil, noting their physicality, athleticism, and fast attacking style. She emphasized that the South American team brings flair to their play and that England will aim to maintain possession and play football rather than getting drawn into overly physical battles.

Defender Lucy Bronze was recently awarded England’s Player of the Year for 2025, as voted by fans. Bronze finished ahead of Chloe Kelly and Hannah Hampton. Wiegman praised her for consistent performance, leadership, and positive influence both on and off the pitch. Bronze’s contribution is seen as vital for team morale and development.

Manchester City defender Alex Greenwood will play at the Etihad Stadium for England, returning to her domestic club’s home ground. Greenwood, who was part of both Euro-winning squads, expressed excitement about the match and the opportunity to face Brazil while enjoying the atmosphere of a familiar stadium.

Wiegman emphasized the importance of these friendly matches for testing combinations, integrating new players, and coping with injuries or retirements. She views the four upcoming friendlies as crucial for assessing squad depth and preparing for future challenges, keeping players motivated while building on their recent Euro success.

England enters the friendly against Brazil with confidence, leadership from Walsh and Greenwood, and the influence of experienced players like Bronze. The team looks forward to continuing its winning momentum while evaluating strategies and players for upcoming international competitions.
