In a dramatic revelation, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) announced that it has successfully foiled a joint plot by Ukrainian and British intelligence operatives to lure Russian pilots into stealing a MiG-31 fighter jet equipped with a Kinzhal hypersonic missile.
According to state media reports, the alleged plan involved offering Russian pilots a $3 million reward to defect with the aircraft. The FSB stated that the stolen jet was intended to be flown toward a NATO air base in Constanta, Romania, where it could have been intercepted and shot down by allied air defenses.
The FSB claims that the operation was part of a broader Western intelligence effort to compromise Russia’s advanced military technology. The MiG-31, known for its supersonic speed and capability to carry the Kinzhal missile, is among the most strategically important aircraft in Russia’s arsenal.
Officials said the plan would have not only cost Russia one of its high-value jets but also exposed sensitive details about the Kinzhal missile system, which Moscow describes as “hypersonic and virtually unstoppable.”
The Kinzhal, meaning “Dagger” in Russian, is a nuclear-capable air-launched ballistic missile designed to evade enemy radar and strike at speeds exceeding Mach 10. It has been deployed in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and is seen as one of Russia’s most advanced weapons.
Analysts say that if successful, the plot could have dealt a significant blow to Russia’s military prestige and provided NATO valuable insights into its hypersonic capabilities.
This alleged spy plot comes amid heightened tensions between Moscow and Western nations, with accusations of covert operations, cyberattacks, and intelligence warfare intensifying since the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The FSB has not disclosed the identities of those involved but claimed that the operatives had used encrypted communication and false identities to approach Russian pilots.
Russia’s latest revelation adds another layer to the growing shadow war between intelligence agencies, as both sides continue to pursue strategic and psychological advantage.
