Delhi, India – Indian authorities are intensifying investigations into a deadly car explosion near Delhi’s historic Red Fort, using the country’s primary anti-terrorism law, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The blast on Monday evening killed at least eight people and left 20 others injured, marking the first major explosion in the capital in over a decade.
The slow-moving car reportedly stopped at a traffic signal near the congested Old Delhi market area before detonating around 6:52 pm, causing extensive damage to nearby vehicles and buildings. Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos, mangled wreckage, and panicked crowds as emergency services responded.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Raja Banthia confirmed that investigators had registered a case under the UAPA, along with the Explosives Act and other criminal provisions. “Investigation is at a preliminary stage and any comment would be premature,” Banthia told reporters. Forensic experts have sealed the site and are meticulously gathering evidence to determine the cause and origin of the explosion.
Authorities are also working to trace the car’s ownership and occupants, who are presumed among the deceased. Relatives of the victims gathered at Lok Nayak hospital to identify the bodies, amid heightened security measures across Delhi and key facilities nationwide.
Federal Home Minister Amit Shah assured the public that “all angles” are being explored, and security agencies are coordinating to conclude the investigation swiftly.
The Red Fort, a Mughal-era monument and a key symbol of India’s heritage, draws tourists year-round and serves as the venue for the Prime Minister’s annual Independence Day address. Despite the blast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed for a scheduled visit to Bhutan on Tuesday morning.
Authorities continue to maintain a high alert across the city, emphasizing the importance of vigilance as investigations proceed into this rare and shocking attack in India’s capital.
