Paulose Paily: A Life Dedicated to Teaching and Inspiring Generations

Post by: Dr. Amrinder Pal Singh

Dubai, UAE – In the bustling and welcoming city of Dubai, where dreams come to life, one man’s story stands out for its dedication, hard work, and love for education. This is the story of Paulose Paily, a teacher, mentor, and founder of one of Dubai’s most trusted educational institutes, Oscar Institute. His journey of 57 years in education is one of passion, challenges, and triumphs.

Born on July 19, 1947, in Fort Cochin, Kerala, India, Paulose was the sixth of ten children in his family. At the age of four, his father’s sister adopted him, as she had no children of her own. This brought him to Chengamanad, near Cochin Airport, where his adopted parents showered him with love and care.

Growing up, Paulose discovered a strong interest in learning. One of his biggest inspirations was his 10th-grade English teacher, Rev. Fr. K.V. Thariyan, whose passion for teaching left a lasting mark on Paulose. It was during these school days that he decided what he wanted to be in life—a teacher who could make a difference.

After completing his Diploma in Commerce, Paulose began his teaching journey in 1968 at the age of 21. He worked at De Paul College in Kerala for 20 years, shaping the minds of young students. Teaching was not just a job for him—it was his life’s purpose, something that gave him immense happiness and satisfaction.

In 1988, Paulose made a courageous decision to move to the UAE, a land full of opportunities. He started working in a private company in Dubai, but his heart always yearned to return to teaching. Soon, he began offering private classes in English, accounting, and commerce, helping professionals improve their skills.

His students often told him, “Sir, you should open your own institute.” Encouraged by their words, Paulose decided to follow his dream of starting an educational center. By 1993, with the support of friends and well-wishers, Oscar Educational Institute was born.

Starting with basic computer courses, secretarial training, and language classes, Paulose’s institute quickly gained a reputation for quality education. Over time, Oscar Institute expanded its offerings to include courses in AutoDesk, Adobe, accounting, management, and even school tuition.

In its 30 years, Oscar Institute has trained over 110,000 students, many of whom have gone on to successful careers in the Gulf, Canada, and Australia. Paulose takes pride in seeing his students succeed and build better futures for themselves and their families.

One of his proudest moments was when Oscar Institute became the first to have an Indian National Arabic teacher approved by Dubai’s Ministry of Education. It was a remarkable achievement that reflected Paulose’s commitment to innovation and inclusivity in education.

Like every success story, Paulose’s journey had its share of struggles. During the COVID-19 pandemic, online learning became the norm, and competition grew tougher. Small institutes like Oscar faced significant challenges. Yet, Paulose adapted quickly, introducing online classes and updating courses to meet changing demands.

Another challenge was the rising cost of maintaining the institute. Over the years, licensing fees increased from AED 1,000 to AED 20,000, putting financial strain on the institute. But Paulose’s resilience kept the dream alive. He focused on providing the best education possible, ensuring that quality remained the cornerstone of Oscar Institute.

Paulose believes in moving forward with the times. He plans to introduce courses in robotics and cybersecurity, preparing students for the jobs of tomorrow. “Education must evolve to meet the needs of the future,” he says with conviction.

For him, education is not just about teaching—it’s about shaping lives. He believes that short-term courses like those offered at Oscar Institute are essential for job seekers to sharpen their skills and stand out in the competitive job market.

Paulose’s journey would not have been possible without the support of the UAE. He is deeply grateful for the opportunities Dubai has provided. “Dubai is a place where dreams come true. This city gave me the chance to build something meaningful and contribute to society,” he says.

The UAE’s focus on innovation and education aligns perfectly with Paulose’s vision. He often talks about how the UAE inspires people to dream big and work hard to achieve their goals.

After 57 years in education, Paulose has learned many valuable lessons. He shares this advice with aspiring teachers and entrepreneurs:

  • Be polite and kind: Respect your students, colleagues, and everyone you work with.
  • Keep learning: Never stop improving yourself, no matter how much you achieve.
  • Be a role model: Lead by example and inspire others through your actions.

Paulose’s story is one of dedication, resilience, and unwavering passion for teaching. From a young boy in Kerala to the founder of a prestigious institute in Dubai, he has touched thousands of lives through education.
