Pro-Palestine protests originating from Columbia University have surged across various universities in the United States, marking a significant escalation in demonstrations against Israel's actions in Gaza. Over the weekend, the protests intensified, resulting in the arrest of approximately 275 individuals across four different campuses. Among the notable incidents, demonstrators at Harvard University raised a Palestinian flag in a location typically reserved for the US flag, symbolizing their solidarity with Palestine. Additionally, at the Washington Hilton Hotel, the site of the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner, protesters displayed a large Palestinian flag from a top-floor window.

The arrests during the weekend protests occurred at Northeastern University in Boston, Washington University in St Louis, Arizona State University, and Indiana University. These events underscore the widespread nature of the protests and the strong sentiments among students regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Clashes between pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian groups were reported at UCLA, where tensions have escalated since the establishment of a tent encampment by protesters the previous week.

The demonstrations have drawn attention from the White House, with President Joe Biden emphasizing the importance of peaceful protests. However, university administrators face a challenging task in balancing the principles of free expression with concerns about potential instances of anti-Semitism and hate speech within the protests.

The demands of the campus activists include advocating for a ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Hamas and urging universities to sever ties with Israel and companies allegedly profiting from the conflict in Gaza. These demands present a complex dilemma for university leaders, who must navigate between upholding academic freedom and addressing the grievances of various student groups.

President Biden's recent conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu underscores the gravity of the situation, with discussions centering on the possibility of an Israeli invasion of the Gaza border city of Rafah. The ongoing conflict has led to a significant loss of life, with casualties reported on both sides. Since the outbreak of hostilities, thousands of lives have been lost in Gaza alone, highlighting the urgent need for a resolution to the conflict.
