Sam Altman, the head of OpenAI, said on Friday that his company has not been clear enough about how its technology works. He admitted that OpenAI has made a mistake by keeping too much information private. Altman believes they need to come up with a better way to share their work with everyone.

Altman spoke about this in a Reddit session where people could ask him questions. One of the questions was about whether OpenAI would begin sharing its research. Altman said he agrees with the idea and that they are talking about it inside the company.
He explained, "I think we've made a mistake by not being open enough, and we need to think of a better way." However, he added that not everyone at OpenAI agrees with him, and it’s not their main focus right now.
A new company from China, DeepSeek, has been getting attention for its chatbot, R1. DeepSeek says it is different from companies like OpenAI and Google because it gives its technology to everyone for free.
"Open source" means a company shares its software code with others, so people can use it and improve it. This is different from companies like OpenAI and Google, who keep their technology private to protect their business.
Other companies like Meta, DeepSeek, and Mistral are also sharing their technology for free, so people can use and improve it.
Someone on Reddit asked Altman if DeepSeek’s way of doing things would change OpenAI’s plans. Altman said DeepSeek's chatbot is “really good,” but OpenAI will keep making its models better. He also said that OpenAI might not be ahead of others as much as it used to be.
