Leah Gazan is defending her choice of words as the term MMIWG2SLGBTQQIA+ faces extensive criticism online. The Winnipeg Centre MP asserts that the backlash detracts from the pressing issues at hand.

The debate ignited when a video from a recent Ottawa news conference circulated widely. In her remarks, Gazan addressed ongoing violence impacting Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals. The extended acronym MMIWG2SLGBTQQIA+ encompasses missing and murdered Indigenous women, two-spirit people, and the LGBTQ+ community.

Rejecting the online mockery and criticism, Gazan described some reactions as offensive and misplaced. Her focus remains on combatting the systemic racism and violence experienced by Indigenous populations throughout Canada. She believes that discussions around language should not overshadow urgent priorities such as funding and support initiatives for these communities.

The issue gained traction, drawing comments from public figures like Elon Musk and Ted Cruz, which further heightened its profile.

Supporters of Gazan contend that the broader acronym is essential for capturing the voices of all victims of violence. Marion Buller, the former chief commissioner of the national inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, emphasized the importance of staying concentrated on the core issues: violence and the absence of ongoing support.

Initiated in 2016, the national inquiry broadened its scope to include two-spirit and gender-diverse persons after documenting the significant violence these groups endure. Its 2019 report highlighted this situation as systemic violence specifically targeting Indigenous peoples, especially women and other marginalized communities.

Additional Indigenous leaders have also shared their thoughts—some supporting the expanded terminology to honor a wider array of victims while others prefer concise terms, though they acknowledge multiple expressions of the issue.

Gazan reiterated her commitment to ensuring sustained focus and funding for programs aimed at prevention and support. She urged Canadians to prioritize tackling violence and inequality instead of engaging in debates about terminology.

This ongoing discourse underscores the complexities of language, inclusion, and the effective addressing of critical social challenges that continue to impact Indigenous communities in Canada.
