At RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, several women doctors have vacated the campus in the wake of a traumatic incident involving the rape and murder of a junior doctor on August 9. This tragic event has led to widespread fear and insecurity among the medical staff and students.
Prior to the incident, there were approximately 160 junior women doctors residing on the campus. However, following the attack, the number has dwindled significantly, with only 17 women remaining in the hostel. The atmosphere of fear was further exacerbated by a violent incident on the night of August 14, when a mob targeted the hospital, damaging property and vandalizing crucial facilities.
The attack on August 14 occurred during protests against the rape and murder of the trainee doctor. The mob not only destroyed the demonstration site and vehicles but also vandalized the hospital’s emergency department, nursing unit, and medicine store, and damaged surveillance cameras. This incident intensified the fears of those still on campus, particularly the nurses.

Nurses, who remain on the campus, report a heightened sense of insecurity despite their crucial roles. With the two nursing hostels almost at full capacity, they are left with no choice but to continue working under these distressing conditions. One nurse expressed the collective fear, stating, "Even after such scary incidents, we are doing night duties and sometimes find ourselves alone in a ward. We now really feel unsafe."
The victim, a 31-year-old trainee doctor, was found in a semi-naked state in a seminar hall at the RG Kar Medical College. The autopsy revealed that she had been sexually assaulted, strangled, and smothered to death. The prime suspect, Sanjoy Roy, is accused of committing the heinous act of violence.
The incident has triggered outrage and protests from the medical community across India, drawing attention to the unsafe conditions within the campus. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been granted permission by a city court to conduct polygraph tests on the former principal and four doctors who were reportedly with the victim before her death.
The distressing events at RG Kar Medical College have not only shaken the local community but also sparked a broader conversation about safety and security in educational institutions across the country.
