Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un, said on Wednesday that her country will never give up its nuclear weapons. She laughed at the United States, South Korea, and Japan for thinking that North Korea will remove its nuclear bombs. She called their idea a “daydream.”

Her words came after a meeting last week where leaders from the U.S., South Korea, and Japan said they still want North Korea to stop using nuclear weapons.
Kim Yo Jong is an important voice in her country’s foreign talks. She said it is written in their country’s rules that they will grow their nuclear power. She said asking North Korea to remove its bombs is a “very unfriendly” act and is like not respecting her country.
She warned, “If the U.S. and its friends keep talking about denuclearization, it will only make us more right to grow stronger nuclear force to protect ourselves.” She said no army or trick can ever make North Korea change its mind about nuclear weapons.
North Korea is also getting closer to Russia, even during the war in Ukraine. Kim Jong Un is not listening to the U.S. or South Korea, who want to talk again about peace and removing weapons.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump said he is open to speaking with Kim again. They met three times in the past, but their talks failed because they could not agree. North Korea wanted the U.S. to remove punishments (sanctions), but the U.S. wanted North Korea to reduce its bombs first.
Now, Kim is more focused on helping Russia. North Korea has sent weapons and maybe even people to help Russia’s war. South Korea worries that Russia might give money or new machines to help North Korea make better bombs.
Kim Yo Jong gave her strong message one day after some North Korean soldiers crossed into South Korea. About 10 soldiers came across the border with weapons. South Korean soldiers shouted warnings and fired warning shots. The North Korean soldiers went back without fighting.
It is not clear if South Korea’s leader, Han Duck-soo, talked about this with Donald Trump during their phone call this week. Trump only shared that they talked about trade, taxes, and how much South Korea pays the U.S. for military help. Around 28,000 American soldiers are in South Korea, and people there are worried Trump may ask for more money if he becomes president again.
