New Delhi has been shaken by a deadly blast near the iconic Red Fort, which claimed nine lives and left over 20 injured. As the investigation intensifies, India’s premier anti-terror agency, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), has now taken over the probe, focusing on three doctors linked to Faridabad’s Al-Falah University.
The three doctors—Muzammil Shakeel, Umar Mohammed, and Shaheen Shahid—have been taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation. Muzammil and Umar hail from Kashmir, while Shaheen is from Lucknow. All three had professional ties to Al-Falah University and were working at its associated hospital in Faridabad.
Authorities revealed that Muzammil’s name surfaced during a probe into a massive explosives haul in Faridabad. Investigators recovered approximately 2,900 kg of bomb-making materials and other suspicious items from two rooms Muzammil had rented, despite residing on the university campus. Additional weapons, including assault rifles and ammunition, were found in a car linked to Shaheen Shahid. Shahid is believed to have been tasked with setting up the India branch of the Jaish-e-Mohammed women’s wing, Jamaat ul-Mominaat, headed by Sadia Azhar, sister of Jaish founder Masood Azhar.
Investigators suspect Umar Mohammed, closely associated with Muzammil, may have been driving the Hyundai i20 vehicle that exploded near a traffic signal in Delhi. Authorities are exploring whether the blast was a suicide attack in response to the crackdown on Muzammil and the explosives recovery.
Delhi Police officers visited Al-Falah University, reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing staff and students to gather additional evidence. The case has raised serious concerns about terror networks operating under the guise of educational institutions.
The NIA’s involvement underscores the gravity of the blast and the potential links to organized terror activities. As the investigation continues, authorities are piecing together connections between the recovered explosives, university personnel, and the deadly Red Fort explosion.
