Argentina will be without three key players for their upcoming friendly match against Angola after they failed to complete mandatory health procedures related to the yellow fever vaccination. The country’s Football Association (AFA) confirmed on Monday that Atletico Madrid trio Julian Alvarez, Nahuel Molina, and Giuliano Simeone will not travel with the team for the match scheduled this Friday in Luanda.
In its official statement, the AFA explained that the three players were unable to complete the vaccination process required for entry into Angola. “The players did not complete in time the health procedures related to the yellow fever vaccine, which is required to enter Angola,” the statement read. This precautionary measure is in line with international travel health rules, as yellow fever remains present in several African and South American regions.
Yellow fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease that can cause severe illness in unvaccinated individuals. Many countries in Africa, including Angola, require incoming travelers to present proof of vaccination to prevent potential outbreaks. The AFA’s announcement highlights how even top-level sports events must comply with such global health protocols. According to reports, the affected players did not receive the vaccination in time, making it impossible for them to obtain travel clearance before the team’s departure.
The absence of Alvarez, Molina, and Simeone comes as a blow for Argentina’s squad planning. All three have been in good form with Atletico Madrid this season. Alvarez, who was part of Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning squad, has been one of the standout performers under Diego Simeone at the club level. Molina’s absence affects the right defensive side, while Simeone’s omission removes a promising attacking option.
Despite the trio’s absence, Argentina will still have some representation from Atletico Madrid in the form of Thiago Almada and Nicolas Gonzalez, who successfully completed their vaccination process and are eligible to travel. Coach Lionel Scaloni expressed confidence in the remaining squad, stating that the team remains focused on maintaining rhythm and fitness as they prepare for next year’s World Cup.
The friendly in Luanda will mark Argentina’s first-ever senior-level match in Angola. The fixture is part of a global tour organized by the AFA to strengthen international football relations and engage fans across different continents. For the reigning world champions, it also provides an opportunity to test younger players and new tactical combinations ahead of future competitions.
Argentina had also planned to play a second friendly match in India during this international window. However, that game has now been postponed after organizers failed to secure the necessary approval from FIFA in time. The much-anticipated match was expected to take place in Kolkata, but logistical and administrative delays led to its cancellation. The AFA stated that it hopes to reschedule the game at a later date once all permissions are finalized.
With Argentina already qualified for the 2026 World Cup — co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada — the current international window is being used for team building and experimentation. Coach Scaloni and his staff are using these friendlies to observe new players, adjust strategies, and keep the squad’s chemistry intact. Even without several senior players, the focus remains on maintaining consistency and high standards.
The AFA emphasized that player health and compliance with international medical requirements remain top priorities. Football associations around the world are required to adhere to such vaccination and travel rules to ensure the safety of athletes and host countries. The incident serves as a reminder that even elite athletes are not exempt from global health laws and must adhere to the same guidelines as any other traveler.
While Argentina’s friendly against Angola will go ahead without three notable players, the situation underscores the importance of timely health preparation for international sports tours. For the AFA and its medical team, this episode may prompt a review of future travel planning to avoid similar issues. Despite the setback, the world champions remain focused and determined to deliver another strong performance as they continue their journey toward defending their crown at the next World Cup.
