Arsenal had many chances but could not score. Gabriel Martinelli hit the post with a shot in the first half, and Kai Havertz missed a big opportunity in the second half. Despite having 23 shots compared to Newcastle’s seven, Arsenal failed to score, which cost them in the end.
This win puts Newcastle in a strong position to reach the final, with the second leg to be played at St James' Park next month. It will be hard for Arsenal to come back now, and Newcastle are favorites to make it to the final.
Tottenham Hotspur will play Liverpool in the other semi-final on Wednesday, but Newcastle's strong performance puts them in a good spot.
Arsenal had not lost in their last 13 games, but Newcastle played well and made the most of their chances. They had already won 2-1 against Tottenham three days ago, which helped them move closer to the Premier League’s top four.
Isak has been in great form lately, scoring 10 goals in his last nine games. He had an early shot that went over the bar, but he made up for it with his goal in the 37th minute. He controlled a long ball and fired it past Arsenal’s goalkeeper David Raya into the top of the net. This was his 50th goal for Newcastle in just 89 games, five fewer than club legend Alan Shearer.
Arsenal had some chances too. Martinelli's shot hit the post, and they had to clear the ball during a scramble in the penalty area. Jurrien Timber missed with a header, and Havertz missed a huge chance to score with the goal wide open.
Newcastle got their second goal early in the second half. Isak passed the ball to Gordon in the box. Isak’s shot was saved by Raya, and Gordon was quick to tap in the rebound, making it 2-0.
Arsenal tried hard to get back into the game, but Newcastle defended well and kept their lead. Now, they have a big advantage going into the second leg at home next month. This win gives Newcastle a good chance of reaching the League Cup final and ending their long wait for a major trophy.
