On Sunday, Sri Lankan officials heightened landslide warnings as relentless rains battered regions already devastated by a severe cyclone, pushing the confirmed fatality count to 627. In the past fortnight, a wave of tropical storms and monsoon rainfall has rocked South and Southeast Asia, leading to substantial flooding, impassable roads, and landslides from the forests of Sumatra to Sri Lanka’s hillside areas. Across Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, at least 1,826 lives have been lost due to these natural disasters, categorizing it as one of the most significant humanitarian crises in the area in recent memory.
In Sri Lanka, more than two million citizens—approximately 10% of the population—have been impacted by the floods and landslides triggered by Cyclone Ditwah, the most formidable storm to strike the island in decades. The Disaster Management Centre has reported that ongoing monsoon conditions are deteriorating the situation and destabilizing slopes in central and northwestern regions. On Sunday, helicopters and planes were dispatched to assist isolated communities, and the Sri Lanka Air Force confirmed the arrival of additional international relief supplies, including aid from Myanmar.
According to government reports, 471 out of the confirmed fatalities have occurred in the central tea-producing districts, with 190 individuals still unaccounted for. The number of displaced persons in temporary shelters has decreased from 225,000 to 90,000 as floodwaters gradually recede. Nevertheless, over 80,000 homes have been damaged, of which nearly 5,000 have been fully destroyed, illustrating the extent of the devastation. Officials emphasized that recovery initiatives will demand substantial time and resources.
In Indonesia, the death toll has surged to 921, with hundreds still missing; President Prabowo Subianto made a return visit to the heavily impacted Aceh province on Sunday to oversee emergency efforts. Despite protests labeling the visit as “disaster tourism,” officials assert its purpose was to hasten aid distribution, restore access along blocked routes, and assess evacuation processes. Long lines for water and fuel have been observed in Banda Aceh, with prices for basic goods like eggs significantly rising. Although damages are extensive, Indonesian authorities have yet to announce a national disaster declaration, which would allow for additional resources.
In Sri Lanka, the government revealed a comprehensive financial strategy on Friday aimed at rebuilding homes and revitalizing businesses destroyed by the cyclone. Estimates indicate that total recovery and reconstruction costs could soar to $7 billion. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has confirmed it is reviewing Sri Lanka’s plea for an additional $200 million to aid the reconstruction process, distinct from the $347 million set to be released later this month under the nation’s four-year bailout plan.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake informed parliament that despite improvements in Sri Lanka’s economy since the 2022 crisis, it remains inadequately equipped to manage a disaster of this magnitude without international support. With continued heavy rains and unstable ground conditions, authorities warn that the ensuing days are critical for rescue operations, relief efforts, and long-term recovery. The situation remains dire for countless affected citizens, and the government has prioritized national rebuilding efforts.
