Scientists from Kazan Federal University, along with two Russian companies, have created a special catalyst that makes it easier to extract thick, heavy oil. This new catalyst is made from a mix of iron, nickel, cobalt, chromium, and copper. It helps reduce the water content in the oil, making the extraction process more effective.
How the Catalyst Works
The researchers found that the best combination for the catalyst is 85% iron and 15% nickel. They tested it at an oil well in the Aksinovskoye oil field, located in the Samara region. During this test, the team monitored the production process for four months.
Before using the catalyst, the extracted oil contained 99% water. This is a big problem because water makes it harder to process the oil and can damage the equipment. However, with the new catalyst, the water content dropped to just 30%, making the oil much purer.

More Oil, Less Energy
The new catalyst not only reduced the water content but also increased the amount of oil being produced. It made the process faster and more efficient. Additionally, the catalyst allows for catalytic hydrothermal analysis, which uses less energy. This makes the entire process cheaper and more eco-friendly.
Future Plans
Erik Mukhametdinov, the Project Director and a senior researcher at Kazan Federal University, shared their future goals. He said that the team plans to keep improving the catalyst formula. They also want to test it in other oil fields. If it works well in more locations, it could become a widely used method, making heavy oil extraction more profitable.
This breakthrough could make it easier and more cost-effective to extract heavy oil, helping the oil industry save money and reduce waste.
