Former Indian opener Murali Vijay has showered praise on the iconic captain MS Dhoni, characterizing him as a uniquely gifted leader whose instinctive choices transformed the landscape of Indian cricket. He reminisced about Dhoni's bold decision to hand the final over of the 2007 T20 World Cup to Joginder Sharma, a move many doubted at the time, which later became a defining moment for the nation. Vijay emphasized that Dhoni possesses irreplaceable qualities, reflecting on his exceptional mental resilience and extraordinary ability to hit sixes.
Having played for the Chennai Super Kings under Dhoni’s guidance for eight seasons, Vijay noted that the former captain has significantly impacted numerous careers. Dhoni, who now focuses solely on the IPL, has been retained by the Chennai Super Kings for the upcoming IPL 2026 season. Vijay praised Dhoni's talent to thrive under pressure and his fearless strategy, labeling him as one of India's most revered leaders. He also highlighted the rare power Dhoni brings to right-handed six-hitting, which set him apart from others.
In an interview on Taruwar Kohli’s YouTube channel, Vijay expressed his admiration for Dhoni's tactical mindset and intuitive game understanding. He conveyed that the team is fortunate to have had a captain like Dhoni, known for his unexpected and unique approaches. Additionally, Vijay commended Dhoni’s composed nature on the field and his profound impact on Indian cricket and the IPL, both as a player and leader.
Murali Vijay commenced his international career in 2008, featuring in 87 matches for India across all formats, amassing 4,490 runs with 12 centuries. He retired from international cricket in 2023 and played his final IPL match in 2020. Vijay holds his experiences under Dhoni's captaincy as one of the most significant milestones in his career.
