Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Saturday said that India and the United States share a “very positive and forward-looking” relationship. His words came at an important time, since ties between the two nations have been under heavy strain in recent months due to disagreements over tariffs, trade barriers, and the controversial American military campaign known as Operation Sindoor.
This was Mr. Modi’s first clear statement about India–U.S. relations since tensions began to rise earlier this year. His remarks were posted on social media and appeared to be a direct response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s public comments made just one day earlier.
President Trump said that India and the U.S. had a “special relationship.” He also praised Mr. Modi personally, calling him a strong leader and a trusted friend. This warm acknowledgment came after months of public disputes over trade, making it a surprising but welcome turn in tone.
Mr. Modi replied by saying that he “deeply appreciated and fully reciprocated” President Trump’s kind words, signaling that both leaders were ready to look beyond the disputes and focus on areas of cooperation.
Background: Why Relations Turned Cold
Although India and the United States are considered strategic partners, relations have been rocky since the beginning of 2025. Two issues in particular created the most tension:
1. Trade and Tariffs
* The U.S. government imposed new tariffs on Indian steel, aluminum, and pharmaceutical products.
* India responded with counter-tariffs on American farm goods.
* Both sides accused each other of unfair trade practices.
* Business communities in both countries started raising alarms, as the tariffs threatened billions of dollars in trade.
2. Operation Sindoor
* The U.S. launched Operation Sindoor, a naval operation in the Arabian Sea meant to stop smuggling and illegal supply routes.
* India strongly opposed this campaign because it disrupted shipping lanes and caused delays in Indian exports.
* Indian traders suffered heavy losses due to higher freight costs and inspections by U.S. forces.
* Politicians in India accused Washington of interfering in regional trade, while opposition leaders blamed the Modi government for not reacting strongly enough.
Because of these disputes, the friendly tone that usually marked India–U.S. ties turned into sharp exchanges and silent standoffs in diplomatic circles.

Why Modi’s Statement Matters
For weeks, Indian officials avoided making direct comments about President Trump. The Ministry of External Affairs only released cautious and formal responses, urging dialogue and patience.
By personally acknowledging Trump’s remarks and adding his own positive words, Mr. Modi signaled a desire to repair ties. His statement suggested that India does not want the differences to overshadow the larger partnership.
Diplomatic experts believe that such exchanges are often the first steps toward resolving disputes. Public words of friendship create political space for quiet negotiations behind closed doors.
Trump’s Warm Words
At the White House on Friday, President Trump was asked whether relations with India had been damaged beyond repair. His reply was unusually friendly compared to his earlier speeches on trade.
He said, “India and the United States have a very special relationship. I have great respect for Prime Minister Modi. He is a strong leader and a good friend. We’ve had challenges, but friendship always finds a way.”
Observers noted that the U.S. President deliberately highlighted personal ties with Mr. Modi instead of focusing on disputes. Analysts believe he is trying to set the stage for future cooperation while still keeping room to negotiate hard on trade.
What Lies Ahead
Both leaders are scheduled to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in South Korea next month. There is speculation that Modi and Trump could meet on the sidelines of the summit for one-on-one talks.
If that happens, it could be an opportunity to ease tensions and push for progress on both trade and security cooperation.
* For India, repairing ties with Washington is important for exports, investment, and defense partnerships.
* For the U.S., maintaining strong relations with India is vital as China and Russia deepen their own cooperation.
Analysts say that neither country can afford a long-term rift, as both rely on each other for trade, technology, and security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
Domestic Reactions
In India, Mr. Modi’s statement could also serve a political purpose. With state elections approaching, the Prime Minister wants to present himself as a strong leader on the world stage. His warm response to Trump shows him as someone who can manage difficult international relationships while protecting India’s interests.
In the U.S., President Trump also faces political pressure as he prepares for his own re-election campaign. Displaying good ties with India helps him project strength abroad and win support from the large Indian-American community at home.
The public exchange of warm words between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump does not erase the deep disagreements that have strained relations in recent months. Trade battles and Operation Sindoor remain unsolved issues.
However, their statements mark a clear attempt to keep the partnership alive. Both leaders understand that while disputes may come and go, the India–U.S. relationship is too important to let collapse.
For now, the world is watching closely to see whether these gestures of goodwill will turn into concrete steps toward reconciliation when the two leaders meet in person later this year.
