In a groundbreaking move to accelerate its artificial intelligence initiatives, Meta has finalized a historic $27 billion financing partnership with Blue Owl Capital. This deal aims to establish the largest data center project on a global scale, located in Richland Parish, Louisiana, aptly named Hyperion, which is poised to be a pivotal aspect of Meta's AI infrastructure plan.
According to the agreement, Meta will maintain around 20% equity in the joint venture, while Blue Owl-managed funds will primarily oversee the investment. Blue Owl is injecting approximately $7 billion in cash, with Meta receiving a one-time infusion of about $3 billion, marking this transaction as the company's largest private capital endeavor to date.
The Hyperion facility is expected to provide upwards of 2 gigawatts of compute power, sufficient for the training of sophisticated large language models—the technology driving AI innovations like ChatGPT and Google Gemini.
Susan Li, Meta's finance chief, described this agreement as a “bold step forward” for the company as it intensifies its AI focus. Once fully operational, the Louisiana hub is projected to generate over 500 new job opportunities and significantly contribute to Meta's growing network of AI data centers.
This deal arrives amidst predictions that leading tech firms like Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, CoreWeave, and Meta are collectively expected to invest over $400 billion in AI infrastructure this year, based on Morgan Stanley's estimates.
In parallel, reports indicate that OpenAI has locked in numerous agreements potentially exceeding $1 trillion to secure substantial computing resources across global facilities.
Through the establishment of Hyperion, Meta is signaling its aggressive commitment to securing the technological foundation of the future AI landscape. This initiative places Meta not just in a competitive position, but as a frontrunner in redefining intelligent infrastructure.
