South Africa secured a commanding eight-wicket victory against Pakistan on the fourth day of the second Test in Rawalpindi. The Proteas successfully chased down a modest target of 68 runs before lunch, leveling the two-match series at 1-1. Pakistan, resuming at 94-4, suffered a rapid collapse, getting bowled out for just 138, which set the stage for the visitors' chase.
The home side's hopes of establishing a secure lead deteriorated quickly as they lost six wickets for a mere 44 runs during the morning session. Although there was some initial optimism, the lower order once again faltered under pressure. The inability to maintain partnerships ultimately proved detrimental as Pakistan was dismissed in less than an hour of play.
Simon Harmer emerged as South Africa's standout performer, claiming six wickets for 50 runs. His teammate Keshav Maharaj contributed with two additional scalps, bringing their combined total to an impressive 17 out of Pakistan’s 20 wickets throughout both innings. Harmer's performance included his inaugural five-wicket haul in Test cricket and notably achieved his 1,000th first-class wicket, a remarkable milestone in his career.
Pakistan's captain, Babar Azam, who resumed his innings on 49, reached his half-century early but was dismissed leg before wicket by Harmer shortly after. This wicket marked the beginning of Pakistan's final collapse. Despite some flashes of brilliance, Babar has not scored a century in his last 15 Test matches, raising concerns for one of Pakistan’s brightest batting talents.
With only 68 runs required for victory, South Africa accomplished the chase in just 12.3 overs. Captain Aiden Markram top-scored with 42 runs before being dismissed by Noman Ali, while Tristan Stubbs followed soon after. Ryan Rickelton (25 not out) and Tony de Zorzi guided the team to a comfortable victory prior to lunch.
After the match, skipper Aiden Markram commended his team for their composure and collaborative effort. “The players stepped up when it was needed,” he stated. “It took confidence and belief to recover from our loss in Lahore. Winning this way, when our resilience was put to the test, is very rewarding.”
Home captain Shan Masood recognized the need for improvement in several facets of their game. “We have considerable work to do—particularly in our lower-order batting and overall consistency,” Masood remarked. “In the first innings, we had the opportunity to post a substantial total but fell short.”
This victory signifies South Africa's 11th win in their last 12 Tests, with the sole defeat being in the first match of this series. The team's recent form illustrates their resurgence in red-ball cricket, characterized by disciplined bowling and enhanced batting displays. Their success in Pakistan further cements their status as one of the strongest Test sides in international cricket.
Pakistan continues to grapple with batting collapses, which remain a persistent issue. Despite enjoying home advantage and possessing experienced players, their middle and lower orders have consistently struggled to deliver stability. The team’s failure to convert promising starts into significant totals poses a considerable challenge as they gear up for forthcoming international engagements.
As the series concludes in a draw, both teams will shift their focus to future matchups. South Africa aims to further enhance their consistency in away games, while Pakistan will need to address questions concerning their batting lineup and strategic approaches. The two-match series highlighted competitive cricket but ultimately showcased South Africa’s superior execution in high-pressure situations.
