Liverpool showcased a stunning rebound, claiming a commanding 5-1 victory against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League. After enduring a challenging stretch with four consecutive losses, including a home defeat to Manchester United, this decisive win renews hope among the fans. Captain Virgil van Dijk stressed the necessity of regaining confidence and teamwork after recent difficulties.
Frankfurt initiated the scoring with Rasmus Kristensen finding the net in the 26th minute. However, Liverpool’s response was swift, with former Frankfurt player Hugo Ekitike leveling the score just nine minutes later. Opting for respect, Ekitike didn't celebrate, choosing instead to apologize to the loyal Frankfurt supporters. His goal ignited Liverpool’s performance, allowing them to seize control of the match.
The revival was propelled in part by Liverpool's prowess in set pieces. Powerful headers by Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté from corner kicks put Liverpool up 3-1 before the halftime whistle, demonstrating their aerial strength and cohesive teamwork that had been lacking in previous outings. The defenders showcased newfound confidence, with noticeable improvements in their coordination.
As the second half unfolded, Liverpool maintained their grip on the match. Young sensation Florian Wirtz played a key role, assisting Cody Gakpo in the 66th minute. Just minutes after, Wirtz set up Dominik Szoboszlai, who scored from distance to extend the lead to 5-1. Liverpool’s dominance rendered Frankfurt unable to respond, securing not just three points but a resurgence of belief within the squad and among their fans.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid celebrated a 1-0 home victory against Juventus, with Jude Bellingham netting his first Champions League goal of the season in the 57th minute, capitalizing on Vinícius Júnior's shot that hit the post. This win solidified Madrid's flawless record in the tournament, keeping them at the group’s summit with nine points, while Juventus has continued to face difficulties, remaining winless since mid-September.
In an electrifying match at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea triumphed over Ajax with a score of 5-1. The first half was a whirlwind, packed with five goals, a red card, and three penalties. Ajax’s Kenneth Taylor received an early red card, granting Chelsea a crucial advantage. The youthful duo of Marc Guiu and Moises Caicedo helped Chelsea race to a two-goal lead. Though Ajax managed to score through Wout Weghorst’s penalty, Chelsea responded fiercely with penalties from Enzo Fernández and Estêvão later, establishing a 4-1 lead at halftime. Estêvão set a new record as Chelsea’s youngest scorer in the Champions League, surpassing Guiu’s record set just moments prior.
The second half saw Chelsea’s young talents shine again, with Tyrique George, a 19-year-old substitute, netting Chelsea’s fifth goal shortly after play resumed. This dominant display underscored the club's commitment to developing youth talent. Coach Mauricio Pochettino praised the squad's energy and discipline, highlighting the promising future ahead for Chelsea.
Bayern Munich had a seamless night as well, overpowering Club Brugge with a 4-0 scoreline. Seventeen-year-old Lennart Karl etched his name into history as Bayern’s youngest scorer in the Champions League. Goals from Harry Kane, Luis Díaz, and Nicolas Jackson rounded off a confident and efficient performance, keeping Bayern level on points with Real Madrid atop the group.
In other matches, Athletic Bilbao celebrated a comeback victory over Qarabag, securing their first points in the tournament. Roberto Navarro contributed significantly as a substitute, scoring shortly after entering the match. Bilbao managed to recover from an early deficit to win 3-1, boosting their morale.
Victor Osimhen led Galatasaray to a 3-1 win against Bodø/Glimt, while Sporting Lisbon came from behind to triumph over 10-man Marseille 2-1 in a dramatic contest. Tottenham and Atalanta both ended their matches in goalless draws.
This round of Champions League fixtures highlighted the emergence of young talent, from Chelsea's rising stars to Bayern’s record-breaking performances. Liverpool's emphatic win and the successes of other leading teams pave the way for an exciting continuation of the group stage.
