The director of the fire department, Wan Mohamad Razali Wan Ismail, told the news that many firefighters rushed to the scene for rescue work. They found that the fire was caused by a gas pipeline that had burst.
Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar, the assistant director of operations, said that the fire started around 8:10 am when a call was made to the emergency services. The fire was caused by a leaking gas pipeline owned by Petronas, and the fire affected around 500 meters of the pipeline.
According to news reports, some houses caught on fire because of the explosion, and some people got stuck inside the burning buildings. The exact number of people who were trapped or evacuated is still not clear.
The victims of the fire were given help at a temporary relief center set up at the Putra Heights Mosque Multipurpose Hall. Some of the injured people had burn wounds and were waiting for medical treatment.
The gas pipeline that caused the fire has been shut off, and rescue workers are working to drain the remaining gas to prevent any more explosions.
