Mamata Banerjee Sets Sunday Deadline for CBI on Rape-Murder Death Penalty

In a dramatic turn of events amid the widespread outrage over the rape and murder of a young doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced a rally for this evening, demanding the death penalty for the accused. She has also issued a stern ultimatum to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has recently taken over the case, to ensure that capital punishment is delivered by Sunday.

The Chief Minister's decision to hold a rally comes as a surprise to many, given the ongoing controversy and accusations surrounding the case. Protesters have alleged that the police mishandled the investigation and accused the Trinamool Congress of attempting to destroy evidence. Notably, Mamata Banerjee oversees both the police and home portfolios in the state government.

Trinamool Congress MP and spokesperson Derek O’Brien addressed the situation, explaining the rationale behind the rally. He emphasized the gravity of the crime and the public's justified outrage. "It is hard to conceive of a more heinous crime than the rape and murder of a young woman," O’Brien said, expressing sympathy for the victim's family and stressing the need for justice.

O’Brien further explained that Banerjee's rally aims to ensure that the CBI provides daily updates on the investigation, similar to the deadline imposed on the Kolkata Police. "The deadline given by the CM to Kolkata Police was August 17, and the same must apply to the CBI," he stated. He stressed that the CBI must act swiftly and ensure that all perpetrators are brought to justice through a fast-track court.

In addition to the call for severe punishment for the culprits, the Trinamool spokesperson also demanded action against the mob responsible for vandalizing the hospital during a recent midnight protest. According to recent updates, 19 individuals have been arrested in connection with the vandalism.

The incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has ignited protests and strikes by doctors nationwide, highlighting the urgent need for justice. The hospital was attacked by a mob two days ago during a protest against the police's handling of the case.

Earlier, Mamata Banerjee had vowed to transfer the case to the CBI if the police failed to make significant progress by Sunday. However, the Calcutta High Court expedited the process, directing the CBI to take over the investigation on Tuesday. The Chief Minister's ultimatum now places the pressure on the central agency to deliver results by the end of the weekend
