Prithviraj gets IT notice after L2 Empuraan controversy

Actor and director Prithviraj Sukumaran got a notice from the Income Tax Department. This happened after officers from another agency, the Enforcement Directorate, searched the office of L2: Empuraan movie producer Gokulam Gopalan. A said the tax office wants to ask Prithviraj questions about the money he earned from three films he worked on in 2022.

Prithviraj acted in and helped make three films in 2022 — Jana Gana Mana, Gold, and Kadavu. Even though he was the main actor in all three, reports say he didn’t take any money for acting. Instead, he was only paid as a co-producer (someone who helps make the film). The tax department now wants to know more about how he was paid.

The notice was sent to Prithviraj by email on March 29. Officers said the notice was created by the system. These types of notices are sent when the tax office sees something that needs to be checked. Prithviraj has been asked to reply before April 29.

This is not the first time the tax office has looked at his work. In 2022, tax officers had already searched his home and office because of some questions about his money reports. That time, they also checked his film company and some people he works with. Other producers like Antony Perumbavoor, Listin Stephen, and Anto Joseph were also checked. This new notice is part of that old check and has nothing to do with his latest film.

Right now, Prithviraj is in the news because of his new film L2: Empuraan. The movie has big stars like Mohanlal, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, and Abhimanyu Singh. Some people did not like a few scenes in the film that talked about the 2002 Gujarat riots. These scenes are about the past life of Prithviraj’s role, Zayed Masood. Because of this, the makers of the film chose to remove a few parts, change a name, and make small changes to some lines.

Even with all this, L2: Empuraan is still a film that many people are excited to see. But now, the tax notice has added more attention to Prithviraj’s name.
