French President Emmanuel Macron has called for improvements to the U.S. peace plan for Ukraine, saying it needs to be more balanced and acceptable to both Ukraine and Europe. Speaking on Tuesday, Macron emphasized that while the peace proposal moves in the right direction, some parts require further discussion and negotiation.
The U.S. recently put forward a 28-point peace plan aimed at ending the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. However, the plan surprised many officials in the U.S., Kyiv, and Europe because it appeared to favor Russia’s interests. Macron made it clear that peace should not mean Ukraine’s surrender or forced concessions.
He stressed that only Ukraine can decide what territorial compromises it is willing to accept. Macron said, “What was put on the table gives us an idea of what would be acceptable to the Russians. Does that mean it must be accepted by the Ukrainians and Europeans? No.”
Macron also highlighted that Ukraine’s first priority, even after peace, must be rebuilding and strengthening its military without restrictions. He added that frozen Russian assets currently held in Europe should be managed by Europe alone.
The U.S. plan proposes limiting the size of Ukraine’s army and giving Washington some control over the frozen Russian assets, which has caused concern among European leaders.
In addition, Macron spoke about a future reassurance force that could be deployed “far away from the front line” once peace is signed. This force would include soldiers from Britain, France, Turkey, and other countries to help train and maintain security in Ukraine after the conflict ends.
He mentioned that about 20 countries have already offered support in various forms, such as air, land, and sea assistance.
This statement from Macron comes ahead of a video call involving countries willing to help Ukraine rebuild post-war. His comments reflect the ongoing efforts by international leaders to find a peaceful and fair resolution to the conflict while ensuring Ukraine’s sovereignty and security are protected.
