British Sikh lawyers have established a groundbreaking initiative in London—a court tailored to resolve family and civil disputes within the Sikh community, guided by Sikh principles. The court, a first of its kind, offers mediation and support services, with the option for legally binding rulings if mediation fails.
The court, spearheaded by Baldip Singh, a 33-year-old London-based barrister, emphasizes that it is not a religious tribunal. Instead, it aims to provide assistance to Sikh families facing conflict and disputes while aligning with Sikh principles.

Operational since its launch last weekend, the court plans to officially commence proceedings on June 1, 2024. It boasts a diverse team of around 30 magistrates and 15 judges, with a notable representation of women, reflecting inclusivity and diversity within the Sikh community.
Magistrates within the court play a crucial role in mediating disputes, facilitating communication between parties, and guiding them towards relevant support services. These services, developed in collaboration with Sikh charities, address a range of issues including domestic violence, anger management, and substance abuse, with courses offered in both Punjabi and English.
In cases where mediation efforts prove unsuccessful, disputes can be escalated to a Sikh court judge for a legally binding resolution under the Arbitration Act. However, it is emphasized that participation in the court's proceedings is entirely voluntary, with consent required from both parties involved.
Importantly, the court does not seek to replace or undermine the existing legal system. Sharan Bhachu, the court's newly appointed lead family judge, emphasizes that their objective is not to overshadow the English courts. Instead, they aim to complement existing legal frameworks and provide a culturally sensitive alternative for resolving disputes within the Sikh community.
"We're not here to take over and upset the English courts. If we think there are safeguarding issues that we cannot handle, they will be directed to the appropriate place," Bhachu stated, reaffirming the court's commitment to upholding legal standards and ensuring the welfare of all involved parties.
