Election Results 2024: Smriti Irani Trails in Amethi; TMC's Sayani Ghosh Leads in Jadavpur
As the counting of votes commenced across 543 constituencies for the Lok Sabha elections on June 4, notable developments emerged, shaping the political landscape. In Amethi, Smriti Irani, contesting for the BJP, found herself trailing by over 15,000 votes. Meanwhile, in Jadavpur, TMC's Sayani Ghosh surged ahead, leading in the electoral race.
The Surat seat in Gujarat witnessed an uncontested win by the BJP after the rejection of the Congress nominee's nomination papers, alongside other candidates opting out from the race. The electoral significance of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh was highlighted as Prime Minister Narendra Modi aimed for a third consecutive term as the Member of Parliament, considering it the launchpad of his national political journey in 2014.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, on June 3, affirmed that the counting process would commence with the tallying of postal ballots across all counting centers, emphasizing the adherence to the Conduct of Election Rules.
Eyes were keenly set on whether the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), spearheaded by the BJP, would secure a return to power, or if the Opposition's coalition, referred to as the INDIA bloc, could defy the predictions of exit polls.
Post the culmination of the seventh and final phase of the Lok Sabha polls on June 1, major exit polls suggested a third term for the NDA, estimating a potential win of close to 360 seats. Conversely, the INDIA bloc was projected to secure around 150 seats. However, dissenting against these forecasts, parties within the INDIA bloc dismissed the exit polls as inaccurate.
The real-time updates from different constituencies reflected the dynamic nature of the electoral process. In Thiruvananthapuram, BJP's Rajeev Chandrasekhar emerged with a substantial lead over Shashi Tharoor of the INC, steadily increasing his margin.
The initial trends indicated the NDA's dominance, securing leads in over 250 parliamentary seats, while the INDIA bloc fiercely contested, leading in approximately 150 seats. This marked the beginning of a consequential phase following a rigorous electoral journey spanning seven phases, conducted between April 11 and May 19.
According to the Election Commission of India, a staggering 64.2 crore voters, including 31.2 crore women, actively participated in the 2024 General Elections, contributing to the selection of 543 members of the Lok Sabha from a pool of over 8,000 candidates representing more than 700 political entities.

In West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) led in 16 seats, with Congress and BJP following with two seats each. Notably, 'Rajmata' Amrita Roy of the BJP contested against Trinamool Congress' incumbent but expelled MP, Mahua Moitra, in the Krishnanagar Lok Sabha seat, where initial trends favored Ms. Roy.
The evolving electoral landscape showcased the diverse and dynamic nature of Indian democracy, with each constituency's outcome contributing to the larger narrative of the nation's political trajectory.
