Lebanese Army Secures Control Over Southern Lebanon’s Weapons

The Lebanese Armed Forces have declared that they have firmly established state control over weapons in the southern part of Lebanon, referring to it as an “effective and tangible approach.” This declaration is a significant milestone for a country long plagued by armed factions operating beyond government oversight.

As per the armed forces, they have broadened their operational jurisdiction across the majority of southern Lebanon, with exceptions only in areas still occupied by Israeli forces. They stated that their objective to eliminate non-state weapons from the region has been accomplished within the self-imposed deadline of year-end.

This region has served as a flashpoint for decades due to continued conflicts with Israel and the existence of armed factions. A ceasefire agreement, established in 2024, put an end to over a year of hostilities between Israel and Lebanon, stipulating that only government-sanctioned security forces would bear arms in the south.

Though the army's statement didn’t specifically mention Hezbollah, it was commonly acknowledged that the reference was aimed at the influential armed group, known for its long-standing conflicts with Israel and considerable strength in certain Lebanese territories. A source within Lebanese security indicated that the army’s announcement implies that no faction will be permitted to initiate attacks from the southern region.

However, the army also recognized ongoing challenges. There's still work being done to eliminate unexploded ordnance, remove tunnels, and achieve full security in all areas—issues that continue to endanger both civilians and military personnel alike.

Amid increasing demands from the United States and Israel for comprehensive state control over all weapons, Lebanese leaders are acutely aware that any slip could provoke wider Israeli military actions in a nation already grappling with economic issues and infrastructural degradation.

Both Israel and Lebanon have accused one another of breaching the 2024 ceasefire, underscoring the persistent fragility of the situation. Nevertheless, the army’s declaration illustrates Lebanon's effort to reinforce authority and avert potential conflicts along its southern border.

For many citizens of Lebanon, this announcement brings a glimmer of cautious optimism. Enhanced governmental control could lead to improved stability and safety in a region marred by years of strife. Yet, enduring peace will rely on ongoing collaboration, meticulous enforcement, and regional tranquility.
