Kolkata, India — The Kolkata Police have implemented extensive security measures across the city as they brace for potential violence during the planned "Nabanna Abhijan" protest march, which aims to target the state secretariat, Nabanna. Nabanna serves as the administrative headquarters for the Government of West Bengal, housing the offices of the Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, along with other top ministers and key officials.
The protest march has been organized by a group claiming to be a students' organization, though it remains unregistered. The group's stated aim is to demand justice for the horrific rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College on August 9. The incident has sent shockwaves through the state, leading to widespread outrage, particularly within the medical community.

In anticipation of the protest, the Kolkata Police have ramped up security across the city, deploying over 6,000 officers to maintain law and order. A senior police official, speaking to NDTV, revealed that 19 key points in the city have been identified for barricading, with major security deployments set up at critical locations such as Hastings, Furlong Gate, Strand Road, and the twin city of Howrah. Barricading is expected to begin as early as 8 a.m., with 26 Deputy Commissioners of Police overseeing operations at various points across the city.
Authorities have expressed concerns that the protest may not be entirely peaceful. The police have reportedly uncovered evidence suggesting a conspiracy to incite violence and create widespread chaos in West Bengal by "misusing the anger of well-meaning citizens." There are allegations that one of the individuals behind the "Nabanna Abhijan" protest has met with a political party leader at a prominent Five-Star hotel, leading to fears that the protest could escalate into a larger political confrontation. The police have also indicated that they possess specific intelligence pointing to plans for largescale disruption, aimed at provoking the police into using force.
The ruling Trinamool Congress has criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the wake of the planned protest, accusing the party of fueling unrest and exploiting the situation for political gain. The BJP, on the other hand, has claimed that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, feeling the pressure, has resorted to using the police as her final line of defense.
Despite the escalating tensions, the Kolkata Police have taken steps to ensure that the protest does not interfere with students scheduled to appear for the UGC NET exams. Special arrangements have been made to facilitate their safe passage to examination centers, amidst the anticipated disruptions. The police have also pointed out the irony of a purported student organization planning to cause such significant disruption on a day when thousands of students are appearing for crucial exams across the city.
The August 9 rape-murder case has sparked a significant backlash from the medical community, not just in West Bengal but across India. The incident has led to widespread protests, with thousands of doctors in Bengal going on strike in response to the crime. Despite appeals from both the Supreme Court and the state government, the doctors have refused to return to work, further intensifying the crisis.
As the situation unfolds, the eyes of the nation are on Kolkata, with many fearing that the protest could serve as a flashpoint for further unrest in an already volatile atmosphere. The Kolkata Police are on high alert, prepared to manage any fallout from the protest and to maintain peace and order in the city. The situation remains fluid, with the potential for significant developments as the day progresses.
