KM250 Gas Expansion Boosts Iraq’s Power Supply Ahead of Time

The Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) has reached a major milestone in its energy sector with the early completion of the KM250 gas expansion project at the Khor Mor facility. Crescent Petroleum and Dana Gas PJSC announced that commercial gas sales have officially begun, eight months ahead of the revised schedule.

The KM250 expansion adds 250 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscf/d) of processing capacity—a 50 percent increase—bringing Khor Mor’s total output to 750 MMscf/d. This surge in capacity is expected to play a pivotal role in meeting Iraq’s rapidly growing power needs while supporting industrial growth across the region.

Powering Growth Across the Region

The additional gas output will strengthen the KRI’s power generation capabilities, supporting the Runaki initiative aimed at delivering 24-hour electricity. Beyond the region, KM250 will improve gas supply to other parts of Iraq, providing cleaner energy for homes, industries, and infrastructure projects.

Alongside natural gas, the facility will produce 7,000 barrels per day of condensate and 460 tonnes per day of LPG, supplementing existing outputs of 15,200 bbl/d and 1,070 t/d respectively.

Project Scale and Technology

The $1.1 billion expansion represents one of the largest private-sector infrastructure projects in Iraq in recent years. Over 10,000 people were employed at its peak, with more than 6,000 tonnes of steel used and a total of 6.2 million man-hours invested.

KM250 incorporates advanced technologies, including AI monitoring tools, high-efficiency compressors, and modern sulphur and contaminant removal systems. These improvements are designed to maximize efficiency while minimizing environmental impact, supporting Pearl Petroleum’s ongoing carbon neutrality goals.

Driving Energy Security and Sustainability

Pearl Petroleum, established in 2009, remains a key player in Iraq’s energy landscape, supplying natural gas to four power plants in the KRI, fulfilling over 80 percent of regional demand and benefiting more than six million residents. The consortium’s efforts have also contributed to a 20 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and lower energy consumption in 2024.

With KM250 operational, attention now turns to further expansion at Khor Mor and Chemchemal, unlocking additional gas resources for Iraq and reinforcing the nation’s energy security.
