Bill Maher to Receive Mark Twain Humor Prize Honor

American comedian Bill Maher is set to receive the prestigious Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts confirmed on Thursday, ending days of speculation and political pushback.

The announcement comes less than a week after the White House strongly denied reports that Maher would be honored. The confusion followed a report suggesting his selection, which officials initially dismissed as inaccurate.

Roma Daravi, Vice President of Public Relations at the Kennedy Center, praised Maher’s long-standing influence on American culture and political commentary. She noted that for decades, the award has recognized top comedic voices, adding that Maher has shaped national discourse “one politically incorrect joke at a time.”

Responding humorously, Maher said he had the award explained to him and described it as “like an Emmy, except I win.”

The controversy began when White House officials, including communications director Steven Cheung and press secretary Karoline Leavitt, labeled earlier reports as “fake news” and insisted Maher would not receive the honor. However, an administration official later indicated that discussions between organizers and the Kennedy Center led to a change in direction.

The Mark Twain Prize, established in 1998, recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to American humor and commentary. Previous recipients include notable figures such as Conan O'Brien, Dave Chappelle, and Tina Fey.

Maher is scheduled to receive the award on June 28, shortly before planned renovations at the Kennedy Center. The venue has recently been under increased influence from President Donald Trump, who has restructured its leadership and assumed a prominent role as chairman.

Maher and Trump have had a long and often contentious relationship. Their clashes date back years, including a 2013 lawsuit filed by Trump over remarks made by Maher during a television appearance. Although the case was later dropped, tensions between the two have persisted.

More recently, both exchanged contrasting accounts of a private dinner meeting. While Trump described Maher as nervous and lacking confidence, Maher characterized the interaction as cordial and said the president appeared “gracious and measured.”

Despite political differences, Maher has occasionally acknowledged policies he supports, while maintaining his criticism of others—reinforcing his reputation as a provocative yet independent voice in American political satire.
