Canada and Saskatchewan Unveil $25.9M Housing Infrastructure Initiative

In a major announcement, the governments of Canada and Saskatchewan revealed a collaborative investment exceeding $25.9 million aimed at enhancing infrastructure to facilitate housing growth across the province. This funding is directed towards upgrading vital services, including water, wastewater, stormwater, and waste management systems, to expedite the construction of new homes.

The investment was jointly announced by Buckley Belanger, Eric Schmalz, and local leaders such as Chad Bachynski and James Murdock. The initiative is funded through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund (CHIF).

Officials project that this funding will pave the way for approximately 29,370 new housing units in major cities like Regina, Saskatoon, and Moose Jaw, directly addressing the escalating housing demand in these areas.

In Regina, the redevelopment of Taylor Field will benefit from improvements in water and stormwater systems, supporting a significant housing project on the former stadium site and substantially increasing the city's residential capacity.

Saskatoon will utilize some of the funds to enhance the Material Recovery Centre, boosting recycling capabilities and minimizing landfill use. This will also aid in managing construction-related waste effectively as new housing developments rise in the city.

Meanwhile, Moose Jaw will implement the Spring Creek Stormwater Management Project, focusing on upgrading drainage systems to mitigate flooding and facilitate future housing development. This project includes pipe replacement, road improvements, and overall infrastructure enhancements to bolster community resilience against climate challenges.

Officials affirm that these vital infrastructure upgrades are instrumental in alleviating Canada’s housing crisis. By establishing the necessary systems, construction will advance more efficiently. The investment also aligns with broader federal goals, such as boosting affordable housing and backing the construction sector.

The leaders emphasized the significance of collaboration among federal, provincial, and municipal governments, noting that such teamwork is crucial for building robust communities, fostering job creation, and ensuring sustainable urban progression.
