John Cena is ready to say goodbye to the WWE ring, closing the chapter on a career that helped define modern professional wrestling. The 16-time world champion will wrestle his final match on December 13 in the United States. Indian fans will witness the historic moment early Sunday morning, December 14, as WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event airs live from Washington, D.C., at around 6:30 am IST. Cena’s last opponent will be Gunther, with the bout officially marking the end of his in-ring journey that spans more than two decades.
With the wrestling world counting down to the farewell, former WWE star and current commentator Wade Barrett has shared thoughtful insights into Cena’s influence, reputation, and long-term impact on the industry.
Barrett described Cena as an “all-time legend,” saying that while Cena’s famous catchphrases are iconic, they fall short of capturing the true scale of his career. Having worked alongside Cena during the peak of his WWE run, Barrett said Cena always stood out because of his charisma, sharp mind, and relentless dedication.
According to Barrett, Cena’s rise beyond wrestling felt natural, even if Hollywood was never part of his early plans. He recalled conversations from the early 2010s when Cena openly admitted he had little interest in acting. At the time, Cena was focused entirely on WWE, valuing the instant connection and adrenaline that only live audiences could provide.
As the years passed, reality set in. Barrett explained that physical demands, aging, and long-term planning eventually pushed Cena to reconsider his future. Once Cena committed himself to acting, his success came quickly — something Barrett said was inevitable given Cena’s discipline and work ethic.
Barrett avoided revisiting past controversies, including the much-discussed Nexus storyline from 2010. He stressed that this moment should remain centered on Cena’s achievements rather than old debates, stating that nothing should distract from such a historic farewell.

Calling Cena’s retirement a rare moment in wrestling history, Barrett said occasions of this magnitude emerge only once every couple of decades. He emphasized that the spotlight belongs solely to Cena and the legacy he leaves behind.
Beyond championships and marquee matches, Barrett highlighted Cena’s wider contribution to professional wrestling. He credited Cena with improving how the sport is viewed globally, helping audiences better appreciate the athleticism, intelligence, and professionalism of WWE performers. In Barrett’s view, Cena played a major role in earning mainstream respect for wrestling.
The scale of Cena’s farewell tour also impressed Barrett. While Cena’s gradual step back from wrestling was expected due to his Hollywood schedule, committing to an entire year of WWE appearances showed a level of dedication few stars of his stature would offer.
Placing Cena among the greatest of all time, Barrett said Cena belongs on wrestling’s Mount Rushmore, firmly ranking him among the top four performers in history.
Looking ahead to the final match, Barrett expects emotions to run high. He believes Cena’s last appearance will resonate deeply with fans, especially after delivering several standout matches throughout his farewell run.
Barrett also reflected on his own rise during the Nexus era, noting that sharing the ring with WWE’s biggest star early in his career forced him to mature quickly under immense pressure.
As John Cena prepares for his final entrance, Barrett expressed confidence in WWE’s future. While replacing a figure like Cena is nearly impossible, he pointed to emerging stars such as Cody Rhodes, Bron Breakker, Carmelo Hayes, and Trick Williams as proof that the next generation is ready to lead.
For fans in India and around the world, Sunday morning will mark the end of an era — the final bow of one of wrestling’s greatest icons.
