Japan PM Takaichi Gets Support from Trump Amid Taiwan-China Tension

On November 25, 2025, Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi revealed that she received a supportive message from former U.S. President Donald Trump during their first phone call since a recent diplomatic dispute with China. Trump told her, “Call me anytime,” reassuring Japan amid growing tensions in the region.

The phone call came after Takaichi made a comment in Japan’s parliament earlier this month suggesting that a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan could lead to Japanese military action. This statement angered China, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out using force to control the island. China responded strongly, including imposing travel boycotts against Japan.

Taiwan, located just about 100 kilometers from Japanese territory, rejects China’s claim and insists that only its people can decide their future. The sensitive situation has put Japan, a key U.S. ally, in a difficult position amid rising regional tensions.

After the call, Takaichi told reporters that Trump emphasized their close friendship and encouraged her to reach out anytime. During the conversation, Trump also updated Takaichi on U.S.-China relations and his recent phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Xi reportedly told Trump that Taiwan’s “return to China” is a core part of China’s vision for the global order. However, Trump has not publicly addressed Taiwan in his comments about the talks with Xi.

The U.S. government did not comment on the call between Trump and Takaichi. Japan’s government remains focused on maintaining stable relations with both the U.S. and China, recognizing that peaceful ties are vital for regional and international stability.

Japan has increased its military capabilities in recent years, encouraged by the U.S., to counter China’s growing influence and assertiveness. Recently, Japan announced plans to deploy a medium-range missile unit to Yonaguni Island, near Taiwan. This move was criticized by Beijing as provocative and escalated tensions further. Japan also scrambled fighter jets after detecting a Chinese drone near Yonaguni.

Despite the tension, Japan has shown willingness to hold talks with China to ease the conflict. Recently, Japan’s vice foreign minister met with China’s ambassador in Tokyo to discuss ongoing issues. However, China rejected the possibility of a meeting between Takaichi and Chinese Premier Li Qiang during the recent G20 summit.

Takaichi, who took office last month, is seen as a strong nationalist with high public approval in Japan. Her firm stance on Taiwan-China issues signals potential prolonged challenges in Japan-China relations.

There are concerns within Japan about Trump’s position on Taiwan. Some officials worry that Trump might prioritize trade agreements with China over supporting Taiwan’s security. Experts say this could encourage China to act more aggressively in the region.

Japan continues to watch the situation closely, balancing its alliance with the U.S. and its complex relationship with China, all while supporting Taiwan’s right to self-determination.

This ongoing diplomatic story highlights the fragile and complex dynamics in East Asia, where powerful nations and regional players navigate issues of security, diplomacy, and economic interests.
