Jaishankar Meets US Envoy, Strengthens Bilateral Ties at UNGA

New York: India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a series of high-level engagements with US officials on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), signaling renewed momentum in bilateral relations amid ongoing trade tensions.

On Monday, Mr. Jaishankar met US Ambassador-designate to India, Sergio Gor, where both leaders expressed commitment to advancing the success of the US-India partnership. The State Department’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs confirmed the meeting, stating that the discussion focused on promoting “the continued success of the US-India relationship.”

Earlier in the day, Mr. Jaishankar also met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio at Lotte New York Palace. Their discussion covered a range of bilateral and international issues of current concern, with both sides emphasizing the importance of sustained engagement to progress priority areas. “Good to meet @SecRubio this morning in New York. This marks the first face-to-face interaction between Mr. Jaishankar and the US officials following President Donald Trump’s imposition of an additional 25% tariff on India’s purchases of Russian oil, taking the total US levies on India to 50%. The discussions coincide with scheduled talks aimed at achieving an early conclusion of a bilateral trade agreement.

Mr. Jaishankar, who arrived in New York on Sunday for the high-level UNGA week, is expected to participate in a series of bilateral and multilateral meetings. He is slated to deliver India’s national statement at the General Debate on September 27 from the iconic green UNGA podium.
