A big accident happened on Thursday when a small helicopter fell into the Hudson River. Six people were inside, including three children. Sadly, all of them died.

The helicopter was taking people on a fun ride to see New York from the sky. It left from a place in downtown Manhattan around 3:00 in the afternoon. The people inside were a family from Spain and the pilot.

The helicopter went up, flew along the river, and then started to turn back. Suddenly, it lost control and crashed into the water near a pier close to Hoboken, New Jersey.

Some people who saw the crash said that a part of the helicopter broke off while it was in the air. Then it quickly fell into the river. The weather was not good—it was windy and the sky was full of clouds.

Rescue boats from both New York and New Jersey came fast. Police and fire team divers jumped into the cold water to save people. They pulled all six people out. Four of them had already died. Two were taken to the hospital, but sadly, they died later too.

Mayor Eric Adams spoke at a news meeting and said, “This is a very sad and painful accident.”

The helicopter was a Bell 206. The team from the government that checks plane crashes will now look into what went wrong.

In the water, people could see part of the helicopter sticking out. Some floating tools were also seen nearby, used to help in rescue.

The Hudson River is very deep—up to 200 feet in some places. It is also cold this time of year, around 46°F (8°C). This made the rescue work harder.

This river is known for a famous crash in 2009 when a big airplane landed safely on the water, and all the people on board lived. That day is called the “Miracle on the Hudson.”

The helicopter took off from Manhattan, flew toward the George Washington Bridge, and was heading back when it crashed. Police said the company that owned the helicopter has not given any comment yet.

A city leader said there have been nearly 30 helicopter crashes in New York since 1980. He said there should be stronger rules to keep people safe.

New York is now feeling deep sorrow after this terrible crash. A family came here for a happy trip, but it ended in great sadness.
