Israeli security forces have demolished multiple structures within the East Jerusalem site of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). This operation occurred early Tuesday morning and has alarmed international observers and humanitarian organizations.
Heavy machinery, escorted by Israeli security, demolished both large and small buildings, which had long served as office and storage spaces for UNRWA staff, who were ordered to cease operations at the site by 2024.
UNRWA has vehemently criticized the demolition, asserting it contravenes international law. According to agency reports, the Israeli forces arrived around 7 a.m., expelled security personnel, and allowed the machinery to start razing the buildings. UN officials maintain that this site is safeguarded by United Nations privileges and should remain untouched.
Former UNRWA employees revealed that the demolished buildings housed essential aid supplies designated for Palestinians in both the West Bank and Gaza, including necessary food and medical materials. The destruction of these facilities could hinder future aid distribution in the region.
In defense of its actions, Israel contends that the compound does not enjoy legal immunity. The Israeli foreign ministry clarified that the demolitions were executed in compliance with both Israeli and international law, stating that UNRWA had previously neglected to settle millions of shekels in property taxes despite multiple notifications.
The Israeli government prohibited UNRWA from functioning within the state in October 2024, halting all communication with the agency. Additionally, Israel has accused some UNRWA employees of having ties to Hamas and involvement in the tragic attacks on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities. UNRWA acknowledged some staff dismissals but indicated that complete evidence for all claims was not provided by Israel.
UNRWA insists that the East Jerusalem compound is considered United Nations property and denies any tax liabilities. The agency also emphasizes that East Jerusalem is regarded as occupied territory by the UN and most nations, even though Israel asserts it as part of its state.
Despite the demolition, UNRWA persists in its operations across Gaza, the West Bank, and other Middle Eastern regions, providing essential education, healthcare, shelter, and social services to millions of Palestinian refugees. The tearing down of its buildings in East Jerusalem heightens the existing tensions and raises pressing questions about the adherence to international institutions amid conflict.
