Early Control by UAE Team Emirates-XRG
The race, which took place on Sunday in the Basque Country of Spain, started with a strong performance from UAE Team Emirates-XRG. From early on, they showed they were serious about controlling the day’s events. Riders like Marcos Freire, Domen Novak, and Jay Vine worked hard at the front of the peloton (main group of cyclists). Their job was to keep the breakaway group from getting too far ahead.
A breakaway of 10 riders had gone up the road, trying to steal the win early. But the UAE team didn’t let them get too far. They carefully managed the gap, making sure the front group wouldn’t spoil their plans later in the race. This team effort helped bring the peloton together just in time for the final and most important climb of the race.
The Climb That Changed Everything
The turning point came on the final climb, known as the Alto de Pike. This is a 2-kilometer climb with a very steep average gradient of 9.6 percent. That means it’s a tough uphill battle for any rider. This is where UAE Team Emirates-XRG made their big move.
Juan Ayuso, another talented rider from the team, started the action. He went to the front and pushed the pace hard. His effort made it difficult for other teams to keep up. Many riders were dropped, and only the strongest stayed close.
With 16.5 kilometers left in the race, Isaac Del Toro saw the perfect moment. Using the groundwork laid by Ayuso, Del Toro launched a fierce attack. His legs were strong, and his timing was perfect. By the time he reached the top of the climb, he had opened up a 10-second lead.
Going All-In on the Solo Attack
After the climb, there was a downhill section, followed by flat roads. This part was tricky because chasing groups often work together to bring solo riders back. But Del Toro was determined. He rode with everything he had, knowing that any hesitation would allow the chasers to catch him.
Behind him, Ayuso once again played a smart role. He did not chase his teammate but instead stayed with the group that included Alex Aranburu from Cofidis, Héctor Álvarez, and Toms Skujiņš from Lidl-Trek. By being in that group, Ayuso helped slow the chase down without directly helping Del Toro. This is a clever strategy in cycling called “marking the chase,” and it’s all about teamwork.
The Final Kilometers and the Finish Line
As the race reached the final 10 kilometers, Del Toro’s lead stayed around 20 seconds. It was not a huge gap, but it was enough. He pushed on, his face showing focus and determination. The chasing group never gave up, but Del Toro kept going strong, showing no signs of slowing down.
As he approached the finish line in Getxo, the fans cheered loudly. They knew they were witnessing something special. After nearly four hours of racing (3 hours, 59 minutes, and 10 seconds to be exact), Isaac Del Toro crossed the finish line alone, arms raised in celebration. He had pulled off a brilliant victory through smart tactics, great strength, and fearless racing.
Ayuso Secures Second in a Perfect Team Result
Just 10 seconds after Del Toro, his teammate Juan Ayuso sprinted to second place. He had played a key role in setting up the win and made sure the team claimed both first and second spots. It was a textbook example of teamwork in cycling.
The third place went to Alex Aranburu of Cofidis, who finished in the same time as Ayuso but behind him in the sprint. The final podium showed the strength of UAE Team Emirates-XRG and their smart racing approach.
Weekend Success for UAE Team Emirates-XRG
This win at the Circuito de Getxo came one day after another strong performance by the team. On Saturday, at the Clásica San Sebastián, Del Toro had finished fifth, while teammate Jan Christen came in second. Though Del Toro didn’t win that race, he showed signs of top form, and that form carried over into Sunday’s race.
In just two days, UAE Team Emirates-XRG managed a second place and a victory — a great result that showed their depth and strength.
Dominant Season for Del Toro and UAE Team
This win marked Del Toro’s eighth victory of the season, a remarkable achievement for the 21-year-old. It also moved UAE Team Emirates-XRG to 69 victories for the season so far. The team has shown consistent strength in races all over the world and is now one of the most dominant teams in the sport.
Del Toro’s win is more than just another trophy — it’s proof that the team’s planning, training, and teamwork pay off in the toughest races.

A Day to Remember
The 2025 Circuito de Getxo will be remembered as a day when young talent and smart team tactics came together perfectly. Isaac Del Toro’s bold move, backed by his teammate Ayuso’s clever strategy, gave UAE Team Emirates-XRG a fantastic 1-2 finish.
This kind of performance doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of hours of training, careful planning, and total trust between teammates. For young fans watching, it’s a reminder that in cycling, winning is about more than just riding fast — it’s also about riding smart and working together.
As the season continues, all eyes will be on UAE Team Emirates-XRG to see what they do next. And for Isaac Del Toro, the future looks very bright indeed.
