Actor Daniel Radcliffe has said that therapy should be mandatory for child actors, stressing the need for better mental health support for young performers who grow up in the spotlight.

Speaking on Bustle’s podcast One Nightstand With Daniel Radcliffe, the actor discussed the challenges many young stars face behind the scenes. While people often believe that child actors are living a dream life filled with fame and success, Radcliffe explained that the reality can be very different.

According to him, growing up in the public eye can create immense pressure and emotional struggles, especially when children are not given the support they need to deal with sudden fame and expectations.

Radcliffe said therapy should be a normal and required part of the system for young performers. He recalled hearing about tragic cases in recent years involving young actors and stressed the importance of seeking help early. He suggested that therapy should start before problems appear so that child actors can better handle the challenges that come with fame.

The actor also reflected on his own experience as a child star while working on the Harry Potter film series. Radcliffe became a global celebrity at the age of 12 after starring in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, the first film based on the bestselling books by J. K. Rowling. He continued playing the famous wizard in seven more films over the next decade.

Radcliffe said that during the early 2000s, mental health support was not widely discussed in the film industry. However, he considers himself fortunate to have had supportive people around him while filming the movies, which helped make his experience positive.

The story of Harry Potter followed the life of a young wizard studying at Hogwarts alongside his friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley as they battled the dark wizard Lord Voldemort.

After completing the Harry Potter series, Radcliffe explored a wide range of roles in films and theatre. Some of his notable projects include The Woman in Black, Now You See Me 2, and Kill Your Darlings. He also portrayed musician Weird Al Yankovic in the biographical parody Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022), which earned him Emmy and BAFTA nominations.

Radcliffe believes that normalising therapy and providing professional mental health support can help protect young actors from the pressures that come with early fame.
